  1. Hey Bob. Good feedback. I agree with you 100%….I thought his career was going to be much more successful as he got older……but like you point out that has not been the case. But…he had a great 1980s….Platoon, The Big Chill, Major League and Shoot To Kill were all movies that I saw and enjoyed in theaters. I first noticed him in Butch and Sundance The Early Years……I thought it really looked like a young Paul Newman. I actually do not even remember his part in either Training Day or Inception. I have seen both of those movies one time…and have never gone back and re-visited them. Inception might be one of the few Michaal Caine movies I have only seen one time….though I have no plans to re-watch Tenet anytime soon either. Good stuff as always.

    1. HI BRUCE

Thanks for the comprehensive feedback – always welcome from busy people like yourself.

As I mentioned in my post to Steve I like the movie Someone to Watch over Me as much if not more-so for the title song as I do for the film itself as the song is one of my own all-time classic faves.

It is a 1926 song composed by George Gershwin with lyrics by Ira Gershwin, assisted by Howard Dietz who penned the title. It was written for the musical “Oh, Kay” and as a song-writing team George and Ira could be regarded as the Kasha and Hirschhorn of their day.***

      There’s a somebody
      I’m longing to see
      I hope that he turns
      Out to be
      Someone to watch over me

      Won’t you tell him please
      To put on some speed
      Follow my lead
      Oh, how I need
      Someone to watch over me.

***Sadly since I last mentioned him on this site – I was the one who HAD to do it: nobody else was going to the whole preoccupation from others being with Al’s songwriting junior partner! – Albert “Al” Kasha died in Sept 2020 aged 83. RIP Al.

  2. Tom Berenger, good UMR subject, a charismatic actor, his star sadly faded by the late 1990s.

I’ve seen 13 of the 52 films on the chart, less than I expected. Favorites are – Platoon, Shattered, Inception, Someone to Watch Over Me, Training Day, Born on the 4th of July, The Dogs of War, Shoot to Kill and The Sentinel.

Platoon tops all the charts. Berenger was memorable as the evil Sgt. Barnes, and was Oscar nominated for the role.

Shattered is worth a look if you haven’t seen it. Great twist at the end I did not see coming.

    Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. STEVE:
I agree with you about Shattered and its twist at end and it’s really my kind of film – a psychological mystery thriller. I don’t like people galloping all over the place in movies I watch!

At the time it was made [1991] Greta Scacchi was just 31 and her stock-in-trade in those days was the playing of sexy temptresses.

I have watched her recently in the TV series The Terror and in it as a 61 year old she is reduced to the small role of a dumpy little middle-aged housewife.

My own fave among Tom’s film is though Someone to Watch over Me – not so much for the wider content of the movie itself but because the title son is one of my all time favourites.

      1. “son” in the final para of my last post should of course be “song” – apologies.

      2. Hey Bob….wow….you are the third person to praise Shattered….I will have to check that one out. As for Greta Scacchi….she was an actress I really liked when she first came onto to the scene….I remember first noticing her in The Coco-Cola Kid with Eric Roberts. Wow….that movie is now 36 years old! Interesting about Someone To Watch Over Me. Good stuff as always.

    2. Hey Steve. Thanks for the feedback on our Tom Berenger page. Tally count….13 for you and 24 for me. I have seen his two almost unknown movies with Stallone….I See You and Reach Me. I agree his star faded pretty quickly. I have seen all of your favorites with the exception of Shattered and The Sentinel. I will have to check out Shattered……3 UMR Hall of Famers (you, Bob and G. Vandross) are giving that movie a “thumbs up”. I have not even heard of it. Of your favorites…Platoon and Shoot To Kill would make my Top 5….joined by Major League, Butch and Sundance The Early Years and The Big Chill (though the last time I watched that one….I was not nearly as impressed). Good stuff as always.

    1. Hey Dan
      1. As always….thank you for putting together all of this information.
      2. Not surprised Tom Berenger has such a high Oracle ranking……though his movies are no longer “event” movies….he is still a very busy actor….which only helps those rankings
      3. First list is massive…..lots of three time co-stars…..though they do not get the title of Most Frequent Oracle Co-Star…as Mark Moses gets that title…..I am not sure who he is….but if I had to guess I would go with the guy that played Berenger’s green officer in Platoon.
      4. Wow only 17 Oscar winning co-stars…that is only a little more than Tracy Morgan’s 14…..I would have never guessed that.
      Good stuff as always.

  4. When I watched Major League and Platoon I was sure that Tom with his rugged good looks was booked for big things but regretfully it was not to be.

Bruce’s charts would suggest that in the past quarter-century or more Tom has been in just 2 significant hits: 2001’s Training Day and 2010’s Inception.

However his roles in those are supporting ones and he is well down the cast lists in both.
