1993 Top Grossing Movies

To make this list a movie had to be made in 1993.  Obviously many movies made in 1992 earned box office dollars in 1993.  On the other side many movies made in 1993 made money in 1994 and later.   This page will looks at over 230 movies made in 1993.  The movies are listed in two massive tables that lets you rank the movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.

1993 Movies Ranked In Chronological Order With Ultimate Movie Rankings Score (1 to 5 UMR Tickets) *Best combo of box office, reviews and awards.

  • Sort 1993 Movies by movie titles and movie trailers
  • Sort 1993 Movies by the stars or in some cases the director of the movie.
  • Sort 1993 Movies by domestic adjusted box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)

  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations each 1993 Movies received and how many Oscar® wins each 1993 Movies received.
  • Sort 1993 Movies by Ultimate Movie Ranking Score (UMR).  Our UMR score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

  1. I’ve seen… 68 of the 234 films on the chart, less than I thought. Looking at my files I have 84 films from 1993 in my movie collection.

    Favorites include –

    Addams Family Values
    Body Snatchers
    Carlito’s Way
    Cliffhanger
    Demolition Man
Dragon – The Bruce Lee Story
    Falling Down
    Fire in the Sky
    Fugitive ,The
    Groundhog Day
    Hot Shots – Part Deux
    In the Line of Fire
    Jurassic Park
    Last Action Hero
    Nightmare Before Christmas
    Point of No Return
Return of the Living Dead III
    Robocop 3
    Three Musketeers ,The
    Tombstone
    True Romance
zz-China – Bride With White Hair ,The
    zz-China – City Hunter
    zz-China – Heroic Trio
    zz-China – Iron Monkey
    zz-Japan – Godzilla Vs MechaGodzilla
    zz-Japan Anime – Ninja Scroll

I have some foreign language films from 1993 that are not on the chart, 19 of them Chinese.

Highest rated 1993 film I’ve never watched in it’s entirety is – The Remains of the Day.

My most watched movie of 1993 – probably Jurassic Park – followed by Tombstone, Cliffhanger and Demoliton Man.

    Nice work Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve…..I am somewhat shocked that your tally is only 68……68 is still a solid number….just would have thought you would be closer to triple digits. Of your 21 non Chinese movies I have seen 18 of them with Tombstone, True Romance, Groundhog Day and In The Line of Fire being my favorites as well. Not even sure I was aware that there was a Return of the Living Dead III. I did like the first a lot! I might have to check that one out. Remains of the Day was a lot better than I thought it was going to be….mainly because of Anthony Hopkins. Thanks for the visit, the comment and the vote up.

  2. 1993 seems to have been the year in which I started paying more attention to modern films than had hitherto been the case because I have seen 14 of the top 15 highest grossing films in the table above [the odd man out being Pelican Brief despite it co-starring two of my own very fave movie stars, Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts – the subject didn’t appeal to me].

Probably my having a video machine and being able to watch movies in the comfort of my own home, coupled with the fact that new releases were quickly surfacing in the video libraries following their passage through the movie houses, encouraged more frequent viewing of the modern films.

My own personal top 15 favourite movies are as follows and it will be seen from my quotation of selected Cogerson ratings that my choices are met with various degrees of approval from your sources.

    In the Line of Fire
The Firm- Cogerson Rating [CR] 69%
    Philadelphia
    Blink
Striking Distance- CR just 35% but I would gladly watch it again
    Dave
    Malice
    Sleepless in Seattle-CR 74%
    Falling Down
Age of Innocence- possibly my fave among this 15
    Guilty as Sin
    Groundhog Day-CR 86%
Man without a Face – Ah in the days when Mel was a God!
    Indecent Proposal –

I am surprised to see this mega-hit featuring Mrs Willis getting a CR of jut 43%

Your comprehensive rundown of the 1993 movie market place earns a well-deserved “Vote Up” and I’m pleased to see that Hanks’ mega hits in both 1992 and 1993 are now being credited to him. As George Gabby Hayes might have expressed it, darn it Work Horse how can you complain about Tom being refused contemporary Oscar love if you are going to leave out a greatest hit from his heyday?!!

    1. Hey Bob…..good feedback on this 1993 yearly review. 14 of the first 15 grossing movies is pretty impressive. Hmmmm….skipping Pelican Brief….not sure I would be able to skip a successful film that starred two of my favorite actors….hell…I just watched Acts of Violence with Bruce Willis….yet another straight to DVD dud for Bruce…that only leaves First Kill for me to be a Willis completist again.

Home entertainment is one of my favorite inventions of the last 40 years…..it has made being a movie fan so much easier. I have seen all of your favorites. Groundhog Day and In The Line of Fire being my favorites too. Striking Distance and Indecent Proposal were torched by critics and audience members…..at least Indecent Proposal was a big hit…while Striking Distance started off well….but quickly disappeared from theaters. I like most of Striking Distance….a decent twist on cop movies. The scene with Bruce and John Mahoney as they bicker while in a high speed chase is a highlight.

Yep….figured I would have to fix some of those errors. Those errors came from WoC generating the star billing that is listed on IMDb…sometimes…IMDb billing list makes no sense…especially when it is two computers talking. Good point about leaving him off his biggest hits. Good stuff.

  3. Heart and Souls was my best film of 1993. The following by your list I saw in cinemas, 1-4,6-25,27-30,32-42,44,46,49-52,54,57-59,61,62, 64-67,69,71,72,74-76,78,81,83,84,87-89,92,94,97,99,104-106,108,109,115,116,119,122,125,126,128,132,134,136-140,145,147-153,156-158,160,163,164,166,171,172,174,175,177-183,185-192,196,197,200,204-209,212,213,218-222,226,230-232 & 234.

    1. Hey Dan….another massive movie watching year for year. I enjoyed Hearts and Souls as well. Good to see somebody giving it some serious movie love. Once again your movies seen in theaters is stellar…and makes my small total seem even smaller. Good record keeping skills as always. I only have my ever failing memory as my source of information. So a round of applause to you and your record keeping skills. Good stuff as always.

  4. I have seen 19 movies from 1993.

The HIGHEST Rated movie I have seen is The Fugitive.

The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is Schindler’s List.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is Another Stakeout.

    1. Hey Flora…thanks for checking out our latest yearly review….only 15 more to go. One heck of a journey from our first yearly review (1946) to the mid 1990s. I have seen 143 of these movies. A good total, that Dan will still easily top.

I feel this is an outstanding year for movies. A very impressive Top 20. That includes two of my all-time favorite movies…Tombstone and Groundhog Day. Glad Tombstone is on your favorite list as well. I have seen all of your favorites…we (WoC and I) just re-watched Sleepless in Seattle just last weekend. Remains of the Day was much more entertaining than I thought it was going to be….I give Sir Anthony all the credit for that….what a performance!

19 is a decent total for you….I think higher than your 1992 total. I see Mrs. Doubtfire did not make your favorites…I liked that movie…but found it on the sad side of things….especially for a movie that is supposed to be a comedy. Still Robin Williams makes it a must see movie….even if it is far from a favorite. Good feedback as always.

  5. This bridged the gap of missing yearly reviews. We now have a yearly review from 1928 to 1994. That is 67 straight years…..well I am impressed.
