  1. More sad news. RIP Paul Sorvino.

Goodfellas is a huge favourite and Sorvino was excellent as the mob boss Paulie Cicero. I’ve seen 16 of the 47 films on the chart. Favourites include – Goodfellas, Dick Tracy, The Rocketeer, The Firm, Nixon and Romeo + Juliet.

Goodfellas tops the critics charts, as it should. The Firm no.1 box office and Reds leads on the UMR chart.

    Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up!

  2. I have just joined others of this site in honouring the memory of David Warner and the following extract is from my post on David’s page:

“Sadly Raymond Burr died before completion of the final 4 in the Perry Mason TV-movie series of 30 entries and other actors stood-in for him in those 4. One such actor -in 1993’s The Case of the Wicked Wives – was Paul Sorvino whose memory this site has also been honouring as I write.”

Raymond’s was a hard act to follow particularly playing the Perry whom he owned; but Sorvino did an entertaining job as stand-in lawyer Anthony Caruso a close friend of the absent-Mason in the plot.

Coincidentally as one of the actors supporting Tom Cruise in 1993’s The Firm Sorvino was joined by Hal Holbrook and Hal stood-in for Raymond Burr in the other 3 of the final episodes of the Perry Mason TV series.

Celeb Net Worth site credits Sorvino with a net worth of $10 million at the time of his sad death. Raymond Burr as I have recorded elsewhere left-behind a legacy of $60 million in 2022 dollars. The 3 cinematic movies listed by Bruce above that I remember Sorvino for are The Firm/Dick Tracy/ and A Touch of Class.

Although considered a classic I have never watched Goodfellas because whilst I am no prude the wall-to-wall swearing of DeNiro and Pesci tends to unduly irritate me as I find it boring because of its relentless repetitiveness.

    1. Hey Bob. Good information on Sorvino and Burr. Interesting to know his connection with Perry Mason. Looks like the acting world did him and Burr well, especially when looking at their net worths. I have seen all three of the Sorvino movies you mentioned. Somewhat surprised you have not seen Goodfellas….as it is considered to be one of the best movies ever made. I would also recommend The Gambler…which has one of the best James Caan performances. Good stuff. RIP.

      1. HI BRUCE: Many thanks for your reply. I will certainly take your advice and watch out for The Gambler. Now that Caan has sadly passed-on any fine work of his should be treasured.

However I will still give Goodfellas a wide birth. I DO like Scorsese -certainly a guy who spends his own time and money restoring Brando’s One Eyed Jacks is OK in my book!!

However the DeNiro and Pesci double swearing-act is hard for me to take. It is true that Mr Gimme More swears a lot; but I can live with that because of the strong Willis personality and the way in which he never fails to entertain me. In short: HE compensates me.

The trouble with the DeNiro/Pesci movies in my book is that whilst DeNiro is undoubtedly one of the acting Greats, Pesci has in my observation aboslutely no star appeal whatsoever and his personality is therefore not strong enough to block out the endless cursing – especially when he goes into duet with DeNiro in the use of the F word etc.

I think that one other viewer – possibly Bob Cox – also objected on this site to Pesci’s excessive swearing so I am not alone in my resistance to it.

It is also argued that swearing is a part of real-life reality so we should unreservedly accept it in films as an “artistic” feature – poetic licence if you like.

I do unfortunately swear myself at times – indeed you should have heard me when you told me a few years back all those things Hirsch was saying about The Great Mumbler!!!

However here is what the late Debbie Reynolds in an interview that I saw had to say about reality in movies. “I admit that I go to the movies primarily for entertaiment and escapism. I know that in real-life people for example vomit when they are sick. But I don’t find it entertaining to watch someone vomiting all over the place in a movie.”

I should add that in a separate interview her daughter the tragic Carrie told how mom Debbie got into a heated argument with Warren Beatty on the set of Shampoo because Warren wanted the 19-year-old Carrie to use the F word on screen.

1950s actress Debra Paget also said in an interview that she would not want to be in today’s movies because of the excessive bad language.

  3. I have seen 33 of Paul’s films listed above; the highest ranked I have not seen is Men with Guns.

Paul Sorvino is # 191 on the 2021 Oracle of Bacon Top 1000. Paul is a 4 decade man on connections. He is the # 480 most connected actor of the 1970s, the # 70 most connected of the 1990s, the # 390 most connected of the 00s and the # 348 most connected of the 2010s.

These are the actors on the 2021 Oracle list Paul has appeared with.

    1. Hey Dan.
      1. Thanks for sharing this information on the late Paul Sorvino.
      2. I had just finished doing a page on the late David Warner, when I saw that Sorvino had passed away. That was a rough 15 hours of movie people passing.
      3. Speaking of Warner….both Sorvino and he were in Money Talks…for some reason I found that strange….as I noticed that because they both passed away at the same time.
      4. Sorvino has been a well connected Oracle actor for decades. Though I do say his high ranking is much higher than I would have guessed.
      5. James Caan, with 5 movies gets the honors as most frequent Oracle co-star. Sadly, he too, just passed away.
      6. 33 Oscar winning co-stars is on the low side for his quantity of work….but at least he got to star with his Oscar winning daughter a few times.
Rest in Peace Mr. Paul Sorvino.

    1. Hey Flora…thanks for sharing your thoughts on Mr. Sorvino. Her daughter is on my list of people needing an UMR page…especially since she is an Oscar winner. Rest in peace!

  4. What a quiet force in acting. I saw him on the stage for a version of That Championship Season. This one hurts.

    1. Hey Kevin. Thanks for checking out our Paul Sorvino tribute page. That is awesome that you got to see him on stage. I knew he was in the movie, but I did not know he played the part on stage. Rest in Peace Mr. Sorvino.
