  1. I had a crush on Diane Lane as a young man, she was so pretty, especially liked her as Ellen Aim in Streets of Fire. Watched that movie over and over in my VHS days.

I’ve seen 17 of the 47 films on the chart, favorites are – Streets of Fire, The Cotton Club, The Outsiders, The Perfect Storm, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, Justice League, Judge Dredd, Jumper, Inside Out and Chaplin.

Interesting trivia, Lane’s career might have taken a different turn if she had played Pretty Woman but then I really liked Julia Roberts in that role so I’m glad things turned out the way they did. Lane is only 2 years older than Roberts and she did get to star with Richard Gere in other films.

    Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve. Interesting that you had a crush on her when you were young man. I knew her as a young man but she never really caught my eye until she got older and in my mind even prettier period. I’ve seen 23 of her movies with you slightly behind at 17, both are a decent amount of movies.. I like you liked Streets of Fire a lot too. One of the stars of that movie could be the next UMR subject.
I actually do not remember her in Judge Dread. Good points about her in her carrier if she had been in pretty woman. We will never know the answer that question but it definitely is interesting. Good stuff as always you are the man.

  2. I have seen 7 Diane Lane movies.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is The Perfect Storm.

The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is Inside Out.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is Chaplin.

    Favourite Diane Lane Movies:

    A Little Romance
    The Perfect Storm
    Under the Tuscan Sun
    Trumbo

Other Diane Lane Movies I Have Seen:

    Rumble Fish
    The Outsiders
    Chaplin

    1. Hey Flora. Thanks for stopping by commenting on one latest pages…especially since she did not make her first movie until 1979. I have seen six of the seven movies you’ve seen….with Under The Tuscan Sun being the only one that I have not seen. I am pretty sure that movie is sitting on my DVD rack right now yet it is never been watched. I have seen 23 of her movies, most recently must love dogs which I saw with WoC. We actually saw that movie in theaters when we were on our honeymoon 15 years ago. Neither one of us really remember the movie but as I was watching it I thought I need to do a page on her and thus we have one. Good stuff.

  3. HI BRUCE: I appreciate as always your comments and feedback. I go off to Lanzarote for my usual post-Xmas winter holiday next Saturday; so I’ll be in your kind of ‘catch-up’ mode when I return. I hope to get a few kicks in at you and Steve before I go though, so don’t relax yet!

I have gone to Lanzarote in Jan or Feb in 9 of the last 10 years. In my first year there I gave up booze for good and instead of being a Richard Burton, whom the poison ultimately killed, I became a Richard Widmark who, Flora tells us, all his life was teetotal and drank things like milk.

I hadn’t known that Diane played Ma Kent THREE times – thanks for sharing that. Indeed there are subtle oblique Marlon/Diane links that maybe only Dan might have noticed.

Diane played The Great Mumbler’s legendary “Stellaahh” in the TV movie version of Streetcar; Diane as you have listed played Ma Kent, Supe’s ‘earthly’ mom; whereas the ole Mumbles was The Man of Steel’s planetary pop; and Eva Marie Saint from On the Waterfront was Martha Kent in Superman Returns; in which Mr Mumbles posthumously reprised his Jor El role.

By the way, you have above provided a gorgeous coloured miniature still of Diane in The Outsiders way back in 1983, showing how exceptionally lovely she was when very young – around 18 years of age, I think; The Curse wouldn’t have dared approach her back then! Anyhow take care.

    1. Hey Bob. As always your thoughts and memory are an excellent addition to these pages. This time around it was somebody that started making movies in the late 1970s. Good to hear you’re going on another vacation, hope you and the family have a great time. Good to know my page helped enlighten you with regards to her playing Martha Kent three times. I did not realize she had played Stella in a TV version of that classic stage in movie. Glad you like the attached photo of her in the outsiders. Thanks for the updates on her future jobs. Good to know she is giving back to community with all her charity work.I have seen all of your favorites with Trumbo being my favorite. Thanks for all of the detailed comments on one of our latest subjects. Good stuff times three.

  4. 6/Also it’s worth mentioning that Under the Tuscan Sun is one of the movies for which Diane received a Golden Globe nom; and it and Walter Huston’s Dodsworth are films that I often, for some reason, feel like watching again every time I return from holiday abroad.

7/Next for the seemingly always-working Diane are (1) at post production stage Let Him Go, a crime drama in which she shares top billing as the wife of Kevin Costner (2) in pre-production progress Y:The Last Man, a TV series based on the comic books and in which according to IMDB Diane has TOP billing. Maybe this in another in the current trend of pushing action HEROINES [think Harley Quinn] to the forefront? – “Who needs ya’ Jason baby!” if I may paraphrase Telly Savalas’ Kojak

8/. With the facial structure that she has, Diane for me is one of the more physically-attractive contemporary actresses, and I have found her more appealing than say the pixie-like Wynona Ryder or the, I feel, rather cold Gimme More [Disclosure with Mike Douglas being a possible exception].

9/So in my opinion, the ‘Greats’ apart, few deserve a Cogerson page more than her; so naturally I warmly welcome this latest profile of a performer who was never ‘A list’ but nevertheless is among those stalwarts who are a valuable part of the history of movies.

10/Diane is involved in several charities some of which focus on world hunger; and at 55, still a lovely woman in my view, it is to her credit she has been able to keep working at least at plateau level. Her half-century in the entertainment business comes up next year – “Get thee behind me O Curse!”

  5. 1/On top of a prolific film career Diane has appeared in (1) 15 stage plays from 1971-2016 (2) 14 television productions, mostly TV movies, from 1981 until the present.

2/Her TV work includes “Stellaaaahhh” in a 1995 version of Streetcar and a television reworking of The Virginian in 2000. In Streetcar she was in excellent company: Jessica Lange as Blanche; John Goodman in the old Karl Malden role of Mitch; and Alec Baldwin as the brutal Stanley [sorry again Stallone]. Viewers of this site who are fans of its Organiser might well have felt at home watching her in The Virginian!

3/She has been well rewarded for her hard work over the years: A net worth at present of $35 million and according to IMDB 15 acting awards and 32 nominations. The nominations include a clutch of the major ones: an Oscar; 3 Golden Globes; and 2 Primetime Emmys.

4/My own personal faves among her present and past films are Nights in Rodanthe; Trumbo; Murder at 1600; Unfaithful; and especially Under the Tuscan Sun. Collectively those 5 films have, from Bruce’s sources, a review average that just about shades “good” – 60.2%.

5/However I like to make up my own mind: I don’t need to hang on to the words of say, Joel Hirschhorn, an excellent opera critic in my estimation; but in the wider field of entertainment a kind of “Jack of all Trades, Master of None” as the saying goes. The Work Horse’s PERSONAL opinions are though always of interest to me and have been a useful guide at times.

    1. Hey Bob….thanks for the thoughts on Diane Lane today and Janet Gaynor yesterday….I stayed up until 3 am last night doing homework and knocking out the Lane page…and now 4 hours later I head back to college. Hoping to catch up on comments tomorrow….a day I do not go to school to teach or go to college to learn. Only have to do lesson plans for class as a teacher…and one assignment as a student. That actually means I should have some free time. Hope your weekend is going well…and now back to school.
