1 When all those years ago I watched Jim in a small part in Eastwood’s Dead Pool I never would have imagined that over the next two decades or so he would be a top box office star with a run of movies that would generate an adjusted worldwide gross of nearly $8 billion according to the table above.
2 For me one of the beauties of your site has always been that the comprehensive stats on a star’s entire career adjusted to a standard inflationary base year makes it easy to quickly identify the box office highs and lows in the career.
3 Unfortunately Jim’s updated page indicates that his box office magic has receded over the past few years. His last movie to crash the adjusted $100 million domestic barrier was way back in 2008 and he would not appear to have made a movie that generated cinematic income since 2014. Carrey’s True Crimes was released in 2016 but nowhere have any movie house grosses been credited to it.
4 My personal favourite Carrey flicks are The Grinch, Lemony Snicket [which I recently watched again with my grandchildren on our holiday] and the box office failure The Majestic with its observations on certain attitudes in the McCarthy Era and a fine supporting performance by Martin Landau.

1. I am sure lots of people check out the last Dirty Harry movie and are shocked to see Carrey pop up as the crazed drug guy in that one.
2. Ace Ventura was a surprise hit…..and for about 15 years he never looked back….but like all comic actors time caught up with him. My sons are a great example…they loved Carrey and Sandler…..now they act like I am crazy when I remind them of that fact.
3. I have only wanted to leave a movie theater before a movie ends a few times….but Carry has two of those movies (The Mask & Ace Ventura 2) and Sandler one (Little Nicky).
4. I will have to check out True Crimes….maybe it earned a little something in theaters…and needs to be added to this page…..thanks for that….as True Crimes has slipped by me.
5. I liked The Majestic as well….but The Truman Show would easily be my favorite Carrey movie.

It always surprised me that Welles made AFI’s legends lists as he was never big box office and Citizen Kane, Magnificent Ambersons (in which he did not appear) Third Man, Touch of Evil and a just a few others are usually the films with which he is most associated with artistically. However maybe AFI was going in for quality instead of quantity and I welcome the update as Welles was always interesting and apparently in his declining years became a public nuisance at times with for example being frogmarched out of a restaurant because
of bad behaviour. He is on record as opining that the greatest American actor of all time was his own pal Joe Cotton which I thought was a bit of a stretch. I never knew that he almost got the Brando role in Apocalypse Now and perhaps he always regretted that thereafter for he gave high praise to that movie.
3 During the coming week I hope to catch up with your other new pages that interest me and with Steve’s new videos. As I’ve said although I couldn’t do posts I looked in on the site from time to time while away and was able to formulates some thought as I lay in the sun
Hey Bob….if it will make you feel better….I did not like the Truman Show the first time either. I think Citizen Kane put Welles on the AFI list. Actually the update really helped out many of Welles grosses….even Kane is creeping up to the magical $100 million mark. Steve has been on fire since completing the move. I am a couple videos behind myself. Crazy but fun weekend comes to an end….but I have a 3 day weekend….so I will catch up on the comments and my Letterboxd reviews tomorrow. Thanks for the feedback.

Hey Katie….love or hate him….you have to give Mr. Carrey credit he has been a money making machine when it comes to box office results. I would recommend The Truman Show. Hey, was Jim Carrey the bad guy in The Dead Pool? That was on TV recently! I have only seen a few of his movies – he is humorous but not my kind of funny – kind of slap stick comedy – but hey, that is just me. Interesting site as usual. Keep up the good work! I of course like the personal facts!!!
Hey Bern1960…Carrey was the rock and roller that got killed near the beginning…his part is small…but memorable…I do not think the guy that played the killer did much more after that role.
