Best IMDb Trivia On Louise Fletcher

1. Estelle Louise Fletcher was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1934.

2.  Louise Fletcher made her film debut in 1963’s  A Gathering of Eagles.   After filming A Gathering of Eagles, Fletcher took a decade-long hiatus from acting in which she raised a family.

3.  Louise Fletcher learned sign language at a very young age, as both of her parents were deaf. When Fletcher neared the end of her (spoken) Best Actress Oscar® acceptance speech for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), she finished with a unique (unspoken) touch in American Sign Language: “For my mother and my father, I want to say thank you for teaching me to have a dream. You are seeing my dream come true. Thank you.”

4.  Louise Fletcher’s role in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) had been turned down by Anne Bancroft, Ellen Burstyn, Colleen Dewhurst and Jane Fonda.

5. Louise Fletcher was in several scenes that were deleted from Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in America (1984) theatrical release.  Those scenes are included in the superior Sergio Leone Director’s Cut.

  1. ooh I really hated her as Nurse Wretched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. And when she finished her heartfelt speech after winning the Oscar in 1976 the audience had tears in their eyes. There you go, as Olivier might say “it’s called acting my dear”. 🙂

I’ve seen 15 of the 39 films on the chart, favorites include – Cuckoo’s Nest, Brainstorm, Firestarter, Exorcist II (guilty pleasure), Invaders from Mars (guilty pleasure), On Deadly Ground, Virtuosity, Best of the Best and Once Upon a Time in America.

Looking at the adjusted box office chart – Exorcist II wasn’t the big flop some were claiming (or hoping) it to be (ditto the 1976 King Kong).

I saw Exorcist II at the cinema, it was awful especially considering John Boorman directed it. But over the decades it has grown on me and when I have a season of ‘bad movies I enjoy watching’ I usually add that to the line up (along with Battlefield Earth, Highlander II, Invaders from Mars, Lifeforce, Raise the Titanic etc).

    Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. HI STEVE:

The Exorcist 2 did make a profit but the producers were said to be very- disappointed nevertheless with its box office yield because The Exorcist had been such a mega hit.

The Work Horse credits Exorcist 2 with an adjusted US/Canada gross of $153.5 million but The Exorcist with an adjusted domestic gross of slightly over a billion.

You can therefore see how the producers of E2 could reasonably have expected more than they got for the sequel. Apparently poor word of mouth caused audiences to drop away quicker than expected.

Surprisingly [to me anyway] Linda Blair got billed above Richard Burton in Exorcist 2.

In terms of adjusted domestic grosses in Part 2 as a matter of passing interest are WH’s figures for a few other big 1970s hits and their sequels. Both The Work Horse and I can’t resist showing off our knowledge of movie stats!!!

      1. 1970s BLOCKBUSTERS AND THEIR SEQUELS

NOTE: All figures courtesy of The Work Horse but very slightly rounded by me.

        The Godfather/$720 million
        Godfather 2/$232 million

        Jaws/$1.2 BILLION
        Jaws 2/$303 million

        Omen/$370 million
        Omen 2/$105 million

        Superman [1978] $523 million
        Superman 2/$390 million

        Star Wars/$1.6 BILLION
        Empire Strikes Back/$895 million

        Grease/$700 million
        Grease 2/$47 million

Every Which Way but Loose/$331 million
Any Which Way You Can/$248 million

You will see that only Omen 2 and Grease did worse than the Exorcist sequel [with Grease 2 in fact going through the floor] and that Star Wars 2 [Empire Strikes Back] did best -by miles- of all the sequels in the bunch with Superman 2 coming in 2nd. Most of the movies in my list would presumably be YOUR cup of tea! Surprising to me Any Which Way [ie Clyde 2] beat the much admired Godpop 2.

  2. William Redfield had a highly respected theatrical/Shakespearian reputation; and appeared in 20 movies including Bronson’s Death Wish and Brando’s Morituri – and a 1964 Soviet Union Russian language version of Hamlet in which he played Guildenstern and which won prizes.

Sadly he died at just 49 the year after Cuckoo’s Nest was released. In the mid-sixties when Brando was going through his ‘wilderness’ period William [one of the founding members of The Actors Studio and an artistic US patriot] drew attention to himself by publicly pleading for Marlon to discover a return to form. He is said to have exclaimed something like “American acting needs you. D**n it – YOU are better than any of those English Actor Knights!”

A Gathering of Eagles was the second film in a row after 1962’s The Spiral Road to indicate that Rock Hudson’s mega star days were on the wane. In 1961 Rock had back to back mega hits with Lover Come Back and Come September which your tables show averaged an adjusted quarter of a billion dollars each at the domestic box office whereas Spiral Road and Gathering of Eagles grossed just around $70 million each.

Nevertheless I am sure that at the time the very-young Louise after a TV apprenticeship felt great about making her big screen debut in a major Hollywood production alongside Rock Hudson. As said I very much enjoyed Eagles but sadly your sources give it a 56% review rating – so do I change my opinion of it? Film historians opine that its lack of critical and popular success at the time was due to the fact that it was rather ‘Gung Ho’ whereas the film community was going through a period where it was critical of the US military because of the controversy over nuclear weapons.

If that estimation is correct then we have once again a situation where politics were prejudicing critics/audiences against a movie that was overall in my opinion quite enjoyable.

  3. HI BRUCE: Thanks for the feedback. I am pleased that Louise seems to share my view that Cuckoo’s Nest was not the type of feelgood film that a lot of people such as I can retain an interest in.

Judging by the way he keeps scolding me Steve seems to think that if you don’t buy into films that have been conventionally very popular you are not a REAL moviegoer whereas tastes among audiences overall can be very diverse.

If that were not so every Clark Gable film when he was in his heyday for example would have attracted an almost identical audience whereas the likes of Test Pilot was a massive hit and [as your tables show] Parnell though popular enough was not a mega hit and Clark had the same leading lady in both movies: The Thin Woman and there are those who like to think that she was made of gold! [In today’s money according to Wiki Test Pilot turned a $16 million dollar profit for MGM whilst Parnell suffered a loss of around $12 million]

None of that takes away from the brilliant acting in Cuckoo’s Nest and whilst Nicholson and Louise are – rightly- continually lauded for their performances nobody ever mentions William Redfield who played Dale Harding.

  4. Louise Fletcher is # 730 on the Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list.

The Boy Who Could Fly featuring Louise was my best film of 1986.

Brainstorm made my 10 best of 1983.

I remember Blue Steel featuring Louise was at our local theater, Lews American in 1990 just a few blocks from where I lived at the time. I crossed the borough and went to see it at the Riverdale Twin, the only occasion that I was ever there. Why did I travel there. Because we got a sneak preview of Pretty Woman with Julia Roberts.

Louise appeared with 33 Oscar winners.

What is Grizzly 2 with Louise, George Clooney and Laura Dern?

    1. Hey Dan..thanks for the trivia lists on Louise Fletcher. Really surprised she not only made the Oracle list but almost reached the 600s. Her performance in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest is awesome….but the rest of her career has been somewhat underwhelming. Looks like some great supporting actors (Austin Pendleton and Seymour Cassel) have the honors as most frequent Oracle co-stars. Just saw Pendleton as Orson Welles son in Catch-22. 33 Oscar winning co-stars is right where I would have guessed…..and an average total. As for Grizzly 2…..some confusion on that one…IMBd says it was released in 1983…..but other sources say 1987. Clooney played Ron….it had to be one of his first movies. I might have to go back and give that one the least amount of box office I can…just to get it included in our database. Good stuff as always.

      1. I never saw it. Since Dern, Fletcher and Clooney have been in my file a long time that info is probably from when I first input it. According to the trivia on IMDB, Cannon bought it in 1987, was supposed to do post production and release in 88, but Cannon had financial difficulties. They also say the film was completed in 2000.

    2. Dan, I greatly appreciate you, your comments, your record keeping, your overwhelming movie experience. I ask that you share with us your top movie or ten from each year. I hope this will not be an imposition . your friend , bob cox

  5. By coincidence I have just finished watching the 26 year old Louise in a 1960 episode of the Perry Mason TV series . The young Louise was quite lovely to look at and in the episode she plays a nice innocent girl whom Mason has to defend against a charge of murder. Her character there was clearly a far cry from the shrew who was Nurse Ratched in Cuckoo’s Nest.

On top of her big screen career Louise made several TV movies and Wikipedia lists 24 other TV productions that she appeared in between 1958 and 2017. That haul includes the aforementioned Perry Mason episode plus another Mason outing the same year. Other famous TV shows that the young Louise appeared in were Wagon Train/The Untouchables/Maverick.

Personally I never took to the Cuckoo’s Nest movie as a whole but Louise was brilliant in it; and I enjoyed her in 4 other movies as well – A Gathering of Eagles/Blue Steel/Virtuosity/Mulholland Falls.

IMDB credits Louise with 12 acting awards and 10 noms. Celebrity Net Worth site quotes a surprising low current net worth for Louise – just $1 million. The only celeb net worth that I have personally seen that is lower than Louise’s belongs to Joel Hirschhorn who is said to have left a net worth of just $600,000 when he died in 2005 [equivalent to $775,000 today].

However it’s possible that Louise and Joel spend a lot of their earnings down the years; though if one were to judge just by his appearance in photographs on the internet Joel strikes one as a bit of a tight wad who wouldn’t have spent much. Still they say “You can’t judge a book by its cover” so maybe Joel squandered a fortune on gambling or was a secret Errol Flynn type who threw his money away on booze and wild women. Regretfully none of my sources quote any acting projects in the pipeline for Louise at the moment.

    1. Hey Bob. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on our latest UMR page. With this page being done….that only leaves two Best Actress Winners that need an UMR page. That will be a nice project to finish when I get those last two done.

Thanks for the information on her television career, awards and surprising net worth. That is a bad sign that Joel did not amass a bigger nest egg. I am counting on talking about movies to be a big money winner…..one day…..lol.

As for One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. A classic, but is such a downer. I have read that Fletcher can not watch it anymore because her character is so evil. So I am sure many feel the same way you do.

As for Gathering of Eagles….I have not seen that one….but I have seen the others that you mentioned…I will have to track down Eagles. Good stuff as always.
