  1. HI STEVE This actually looks like Bruce’s normal temporary lead-in layout. I hope it’s permanent as I don’t want that 2.30am little gem of mine to get lost! I actually think the comments print style on this version is neater than that on the permanent layout. Of course my views will as usual be ignored. However I’m long resigned to that: it’s par for the course when the ordinary guy gets involved with a couple of ‘know alls’ like WH and Hirsch.

    1. Hey Bob Roy……this comment and your 2:30 gem have both survived the move from post to page. I do appreciate your thoughts on the neater look of the “post” comment area. However….having pages that go between post and pages causes some minor disturbances in the dynamic website. So I had to make this a Tomei page as well. Speaking of Hirsch….did you see one of his ones made Tomei’s page….coming in at #22 Slums of Beverly Hills. Good stuff as always.

      1. HI BRUCE: Thanks for the explanation. I must once again congratulate you and your ‘Nora’ for your detailed mastery of IT. I can operate all kinds of programmes on the computer once my daughter shows them to me but I don’t have the overview that you and Mrs Charles do.

Hirsch and The Slums of Beverly Hills – even Dan in his finest form could not have fashioned a more appropriate link. I am reminded of a general election campaign over here when a sitting Minister of the incumbent Conservative Government got up in public to make a campaign speech and didn’t notice that a garbage truck was parked in the background. The next day a newspaper supporting the Labour Party Opposition reported the speech with the headline “Minister talks garbage!”

I had forgotten about Hirsch and ‘Slums’. You see in my own databases I list a movie under only the lead partner where there is one and I had ‘Slums’ filed under Al Kasha. “There’s only so many hands in a deck of cards.” [Rufus Ryker, Shane 1953].

By the way, did you notice that in the official credits for ‘Slums’, and Freaky Friday, The Master is listed as Joel Hirschorn with just one small ‘h’? Maybe the producers of those two flicks thought ‘Hirschhorn’ was too pretentious. Some movie folk adds letters to their names so that they will be elongated in the credits. Others don’t need to get up to such tricks to have their names noticed – just ‘Elvis’ and ‘Asta’ were always enough; and there has never been a Marrlon Branndo; though ‘Loy’ could have done with a bit of lengthening!

Back to the Woman of the Hour: it’s a pity that Marisa’s screen career was just commencing [in 1984] when Joel’s 1983 book was hitting the horror sections of the bookstores – ships that pass in the night. Anyway hope you are enjoying a well-deserved weekend break, and keep safe.

        1. Hey Bob…..thanks for the nice shout out for WoC and her IT skills. You are forgiven for forgetting how Slums is one of Joel’s Jewels…..lol. Marisa might not have a Joel mention…but now she is UMR royalty….lol. Good stuff as always.

  2. In the film Better the Devil Knows You’re Dead, the sequence where they rob the jewelry store is in the mall a few blocks from where I live (it’s standing in for a town in Westchester County.

Cyrus was my worst picture by far for 2010.

Marisa is # 837 on the Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list; these are the other actors on the list she has appeared with.

    1. Hey Dan. As always…thank you. Especially since both lists you provided are so packed with trivia. That is cool that you live near where they filmed Before The Devil Knows Your Dead. That is a very good movie….but so bleak I have never gone back to re-visit that one. Sidney Lumet’s last good movie. It looked Cyrus was going to be good….instead it was a disappointing movie for sure.

First list: Surprised she is that far down the list of Oracle thespians. Still…a spot in the Top 1000….and I am sure she will continue to move up the list…as people like Kirk Douglas move down the list. Looks like good ole RDJ is her most frequent co-star on the first list. Makes you wonder if Downey, Jr. had a say in Tomei getting the Aunt May role in the Marvel universe.

Second list: 39 is a number that would even grab Sir Michael’s attention. Of all the actresses you have provided information on….not many get this high. Surprised that she and Caine have not crossed paths in a movie yet….and I fear that time is running out as Caine gets closer and closer to 90. Good stuff as always.

  3. Not the usual page design for your subjects Bruce, is this because of database issues you mention in your post? I prefer the usual layout. Plus the comment box is smaller here. I’ve seen 18 of the 56 films on the chart, more than I thought. Favorites include Spiderman 1-2, Captain America Civil War, Wild Hogs, My Cousin Vinny, Oscar and Chaplin. It’s been years since I saw The Wrestler. I remember liking Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, need to give that another spin. Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve….our tech issues are the result of this being a “post” versus a “page”. For large parts of yesterday….out database was M.I.A. Gotta admit…the prospect of 8 years of work disappearing was very concerning….especially when the back up files were having the same problems. But….today things look better….lots of work to do….but we see the database again. Last night we watched The Command/Kursk….and it was like hearing the men banging on the submarine.

Part 2…..this Marisa Tomei page is now a page like all the other pages….shifted over the comments as well…sorry we had so many problems yesterday.

  4. Cute Marisa has not only been a very prolific thespian, but a highly diverse one as well. On top of the 56 movies listed above she has been in 19 television productions [1983-this year] and 15 stage plays [1986-this year]. Her stage play in 2019 has been as Serafina Della Rose in a further Broadway production of Tennessee Williams’ The Rose Tattoo. As we know some top male stars have found themselves sadly without the acting skills to tackle Williams’ work.

In her movies she has appeared alongside many important names in today’s cinema: such as Robert Downey Jr, Michael Keaton, Glenn Close, Hugh Grant Keanu Reeves and the greatest of them all Nicholson and Mel Gibson, though at other times she has unfortunately had to make do with C list male leads as in My Cousin Vinny for example.

She has never been an idol of mine in the way that the likes of Crawford, Day, Streisand and Loy have; nevertheless I have found her a delight to watch in the following 9 movies that I have seen her in so this new page is “Voted Up!”

    The Paper
    What Women Want
    The Watcher
    Anger Management
Before The Master Know You’re Dead
    The Lincoln Lawyer
    The Ides of March
    In the Bedroom
    The Rewrite.

Celebrity net worth quotes Marisa’s current fortune as $20 million, though other sources say it is around $43 million. Either way acting has been a lucrative profession for her and that’s good to see. A measure of her artistic success are the 27 acting awards and 53 nominations that IMDB credit her with.

    1. Hey Bob.
      1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Marisa Tomei.
      2. At work….I was talking with UMR Hall of Famer George about the lack of Best Supporting Actress winners that we have UMR pages on…..this got him to mention Tomei. When I said she would probably have about 60 movies…George was like…”no way is that true”. Well…it turns out she has 56…and #57 comes out on October 27th. So I would say I agree with your “very prolific thespian” comment.
      3. Thanks for sharing the information on her current stage work…I had not heard that before. Between the movies, televison and stage…she appears to be one of the hardest working woman in show business…kudos to her.
      4. You keep picking on Joe Pesci…and one day you might be visited by the Good Fellas…..you saw what Pesci did to the guy that thought he was funny….imagine what he would do to the guy that said…”C list male leads as in My Cousin Vinny”….lol.
      5. Tally count…..me 37, you 9 and Flora 2.
      6. I have not seen In The Bedroom….I actually did not remember she got an Oscar nomination for that movie….that is until I saw my very own page….we have it set up so well….lol.
      7. I hope you see I transferred this comment from my Marisa post to my Marisa page.
      Good stuff as always.

  5. I’ve seen 2 Marisa Tomei films: The Big Short and Chaplin. Neither are favourites. However, I saw The Big Short on the big screen.

    1. Hey Flora.
      1. Thanks for the comment on a very recent Oscar winner.
      2. Tally count…2 for you….and 37 for me….that is a lot more than I was expecting.
      3. I have seen both of the ones you have seen…I saw The Big Short in theaters….bought a copy of the movie on Blu-Ray…yet have never bothered to watch it a second time.
      4. As for Chaplin….I liked the movie…I thought Robert Downey, Jr. was good in the movie…but ultimately I thought it could have been so much better.
      5. After a day full of database problems….it looks…(fingers crossed)…the errors have been fixed. Good stuff as always.
