  1. Cogerson, I love odd thomas and perfectly agree on many others especially grand Budapest hotel and last temptation. I think Mississippi burning and born on the 4th of july are tens I may only watch every 3 or 4 decades. i think platoon is a ten but like saving private ryan I have trouble with the ending. I prefer the cheery ending of apocalypse now LOL, or patton my number 1 war movie. from UMR list I saw 25 including top18. agree with UMR on horrible rating of speed 2, the walker, and body of evidence.

    1. Hey bob cox…..glad to see you liked Odd Thomas too. I have seen that movie 4 or 5 times over the last 3 or 4 years. What an ending….I admit….it makes me tear up. And now…the movie is eerie with the strange passing of Anton Yelchin. Run over by his own car….what are the odds. I also agree with you about Mississippi Burning and Born on the 4th of July…good movies….but not ones that beg to be re-watched. Speed 2 is horrible…one of the worst remakes of all-time. Wow…we agree so much…..you must be a very smart person too!…..lol. Good feedback.

  2. Willem Dafoe is # 7 on the 2016 Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list (he’s up to 5 now). He has done this without working with Sir. Michael Caine but he has worked with Bessie Love, star of 1929’s The Broadway Melody. These are the actors on the 2016 list he has worked with;

    1. COPIED FROM STEVE’S OWN COGERSON PAGE

William Devan has the small but strong role of Jesse Stone’s “shrink” throughout the 9 Jesse Stone TV movies starring Tom Selleck. I mention William because for a long time I constantly confused him with Willem Dafoe, your latest video subject. Willem, especially when he was younger, struck me as having a kind of rough-hewed Bogie type face.

Willem is one of the most prolific movie makers in the modern cinema and The Numbers box office site for example lists 83 movie credits for him so you would seem to have covered approx. half of his output.

The best POSTERS in entries 40-21 in your Dafoe video are in my opinion Dog Eat Dog, Off Limits, foreign language one for the Great Wall, Loveless, Once upon a Time in Mexico, Anti-Christ [breathtaking] What Happened on Monday, Light Sleeper, The Hunter, Triumph of the Spirit, Ezistenz and the shadowy raunchy one for Auto Focus.

To be continued. ALL stills that I like in the entire video will be mentioned in Part 2 tomorrow

      1. COPIED FROM STEVE’s OWN COGERSON U TUBES PAGE – PART 2 OF MY COMMENTS on STEVE’s VIDEO

The best POSTERS in entries 1-20 are I think both ones for John Carter, Odd Joel, Streets of Fire, the 1st one for Shadow of Hirschhorn, John Wick, Florida Project, 1st one for Spidey [really original], The Fantastic Mr Cogerson [with my Gorgeous George topping the bill] The Irish Patient, Finding Nemo and the 2nd one for Platoon

The best STILLS in the entire 40 entry video are in my book (1) Body of Evidence (2) Flight of the Intruder (3) with Harrison Ford (4) solo from Live and Die in LA (5) Florida Project (6) the Last Temptation of Christ (7) with Hackman (8) with Cruise? – the beards and the speed with which your pictorials change make it difficult to be certain and (9) what I think is a foreignlanguage lobby card or still for the new Murder on the Orient Express? It was a terrific pictorial from you anyway.

Saw that remake recently and quite enjoyed it. I was annoyed though that real life modern drunk and druggie bad boy Depp played the villain Ratchett, a role performed in the 1974 version by my Richard who was an upstanding teetotal real life citizen. A new take on type casting in both cases!

Bruce’s figures suggest that the 2017 version hasn’t done as well in the US as the 1974 one with adjusted domestic grosses of $105 and $280 million respectively. However the 2017 version did far better abroad than in the states with an adjusted worldwide gross of around $360 million but as I can find no notification of foreign revenues for the 1974 version global box comparisons can not be made.

Many of your 40 entries are new to me and that freshness together with some marvellous basic content in the pictorials make your overall video worth a 98% rating to me. Good stuff.

        1. COPIED FROM STEVE’S OWN COGERSON U TUBE PAGE

Hi Bob, thanks for the review, generous rating, box office info and tri
via, it is appreciated. Happy the pictorial presentation met with your approval.

That was Tom Cruise with Dafoe in the frame capture taken from Born on the Fourth of July. I agree it’s hard to tell with those beards, and we don’t often see a bearded Tom.

Depp was too subdued as the nasty Ratchett in Orient Express, I doubt he even changed his facial expression in the few scenes we see him in. That star cast couldn’t match the original. I did like the photography and scenery though, and Branagh and that ginormous mustache gave Poirot a good shot. David Suchet remains the definitive Belgian detective for Agatha Christie fans I’m sure.

There are reports though that the legendary Jason Statham may play Hercule in the next one – ‘Murders on the London Underground’, and the all star cast are rumored to include Chuck Norris, Dolph Lundgren, Idris Elba and Will Ferrell, with Mickey Rourke as the villainous Wretched.

Five Willem Dafoe movie scored 10 out of 10 from my sources –

          Platoon
          Finding Nemo
          Grand Budapest Hotel ,The
          English Patient ,The
Born on the Fourth of July

There is one scoring 9 out of 10 – Shadow of the Vampire, a fiction about the making of silent classic Nosferatu (1922) with Dafoe playing actor Max Schreck as a real vampire! I wonder what Schreck’s descendants thought of that idea?

10 more scored 8 out of 10 from various sources including Mississippi Burning, Fantastic Mr. Fox and Last Temptation of Christ.

The top 3 films I listed above scoring 10 out of 10 all scored 8.1 at IMDB, top rated at Rotten Tomatoes was Finding Nemo.

“I’m an optimist. I hope if a movie’s good that it will be a success, but as we know, that’s not always true, just because of popular taste, advertising, distribution patterns, there’s lots of reasons. When something doesn’t do better than it deserves to in your mind, it’s pretty transparent, you usually know why. Is that a comfort? Yes, because it’s logical. Does it make you happy? No, because if you think a movie is beautiful or interesting, you want to share it. It’s really true; there’s no accounting for taste. Sometimes you make very interesting movies that aren’t meant for everybody. But this is a capitalist society, so everything conspires to put value on whether it sells or not. While we have a very strong popular culture, the roots of our culture are very shallow, and we put emphasis on how a movie does as far as the box office goes. Many years ago, it would have been vulgar to print box-office grosses in the paper. Now The New York Times does it, and it’s the big story for people interested in arts and entertainment on Monday. Which is why emphasis has shifted away from filmmakers and fallen on movie stars and business people.”

          1. COPIED FROM STEVE’S OWN U TUBE COGERSON PAGE

HI STEVE Thanks for your feedback on my Willem Dafoe posts, for the Tom Cruise confirmation and your scoring explanations. Other points in your post that deserve a response in my view-

1/Agree wholeheartedly with you about Suchet. He said though that it took him a while to perfect the interpretation. For example it wasn’t until late in the day that he added in that perfect mincing walk. Ustinov I thought was the worst but in a tie with Tony Randall – Peter was too big and iconic to play Poirot and Randall played Hercule as almost a buffoon.

2/Interesting information about Statham, Lundgren etc. Is somebody making an educational version that will demonstrate how NOT to act? One, admittedly highbrow, critic opined that those guys Vin Diesel, Stallone, The Rock etc appealed to ”the lowest common denominator”.

3/Depp’s record in private life would suggest that it was just as well that they kept him subdued. I am reminded of Dr David Banner who changed into The Incredible Hulk when he got angry, so in the TV series Banner used to caution people who were irritating him “Stop it. You wouldn’t like me if I got angry!”

4/Excellent long quote which I agree with and which tends to support the critic I mention in 2/ above. Pity someone didn’t show Joel that quote as it might have kept him from singling out for crucifixion poor ole Mumbles and the money he earned. “Let him among you who is without sin cast the first stone!”

By the way I meant to say to you that your implication that Samuel L Jackson admirers would go to see his movies without caring about his billing might be a bit too sweeping to be always accurate if my own experiences are anything to go by.

For example you are half right in that I did go to see Brando in Reflections in a Golden Eye but it pained me to see him take 2nd billing to Liz. In short I CARED about his demotion and the fact that at that time [1967 before his Godpop/Last Tango revival] Liz deserved to receive 1st billing did nothing to ease my pain.

Great chatting with you. I will catch up again when I see your next video.

          2. COPIED FROM STEVE’OWN U TUBE PAGE ON COGERSON

Hey Bob and Steve…good conversation about Willem Dafoe. I have thought of doing a page on Dafoe…just never pulled the trigger….and now Steve gets it done first. After watching his video and seeing all those great movies…maybe it is time to give Willem some UMR love. Good feedback from the both of you

          3. Hey Bob…..thanks for transferring the comments to this page. Your efforts are appreciated.

    2. Dan, great list. number 5 is amazing and with a bullet. maybe a new long for currents. good to see bill Paxton hanging in at 300 and Phillip Seymour Hoffman at 291. both above Denzel Washington and Leonardo Dicaprio. thanks for all you do. yea UMR, yea UMR commenters, yea Dan.

        1. Hey Dan….I have seen lots of comments that mention your lists…..but I think you are correct…this is the first time somebody other than the Cogersons that has responded directly to your list. Good job bob cox….you are the man.

    3. Hey Dan…..epic epic lists. First list is one of the largest yet! So Dafoe is in the Top 5? I imagine he can’t get too much higher….he is a busy actor…but only appears in about 3 or 4 movies a year….usually high quality movies. But Danny T. and Eric R. make about 10 to 15 movies…usually low budget flicks nobody has heard of before.

Shocking that Dafoe and Caine have not run across each other in movies….luckily Caine seems to have bounced back from his broken ankle…so maybe they can still make a movie together. 41 Oscar winning co-stars is a good total….but lower than I thought. He has 70 movies listed here…but another 20 or so that never got released in theater..seems the total should be even higher with that amount of movies.

Lots of co-stars that he worked with 3 times…but Johnny Depp and Mickey Rourke have 4 movies with Dafoe….each. Not sure I would have guessed them. As always….good stuff..and thanks for taking the time to put this information together.

  3. Wow!!!!!! 70 movies for Willem Dafoe. I had no idea he was that productive. I like many of your favorites; but can not say I have heard of Odd Thomas. He is Norman Osborne!!!!!! Love love him in the Spider-Man movies!!!!!!!

    1. Hey Layla….yep Mr.Dafoe has been very very busy. I highly recommend Odd Thomas. A hidden gem of a movie. I agree he was very good as the Green Goblin. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

  4. So Steve listed 40 movies, we list 70….of those 70…I have seen 49 of those movies:

My personal Willem Dafoe Top Ten…in ABC Order

    Clear and Present Danger
    Finding Nemo
    John Wick
    Odd Thomas
    Out of the Furnace
    Platoon
    Streets Of Fire
    What Happened To Monday
    Spiderman
To Live And Die In L.A.

  5. My comment on Steve’s Dafoe video.

“Willem Dafoe might have another Oscar nomination coming this year…as At Eternity’s Gate is getting some early Oscar buzz. Movies 40 through 31…seen 7 of them. Loved What Happened to Monday…couple of turkeys in Body of Evidence and The Great Wall (he was wasted in that one). Movies 30 through 21….seen 7 again…so 14 of the bottom 20. Existenz was a waste of time, liked Murder on the Orient Express…not too impressed with Dafoe’s role. Movies 20 through 11…#20 John Carter massive box office misfire #19 Odd Thomas…love this movie….one of my top 10 movies of the last 10 years #18 Streets of Fire….guilty pleasure. #17 Clear and Present Danger…good Ryan movie #16 Boondock Saints…cult classic #15 Shadow of Vampire…not as good as I was expecting #14 Life of Steve Z…did not like at all. #13 To Live and Die In L.A……another all-time favorite. #12 Wild at Heart…it was ok…he Dies Hard in that one #11 John Wick….great action movie….so 10 for 10 in this group. Movies 10 through 1…#10 Florida Project….great performance #9 Spiderman – his biggest hit #8 Fantastic Fox…great animated movie #7 Last Temptation of Christ….not a favorite at all. #6 Mississippi Burning…good movie…but not one that begs to be rewatched #5 Born on 4th of July…same comment as #5 #4 English Patient…one of his Best Picture Oscar winning movies #3 Grand Hotel Budapest….did not like this one as much as others did. #2 Finding Nemo….I guess this is his biggest hit. #1 Platoon….all-time great movie….probably the best war movie ever made…in my humble opinion. 10 for 10…and 34 out of 40 overall. Good video. Voted up and shared.”
