1969 Movies

Finding box office information for movies made before 1980 is not an easy task.   For somebody looking for box office information on 1969 it is very very frustrating.  Over the years, we have researched and collected information on over 36,000 movies.  So we figured we would show all the 1969 movies in our database.

To make this list a movie had to be made in 1969.  This page will looks at 123 1969 Top Box Office Movies.  The movies are listed in a massive table that lets you rank the movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.    This only represents about 33% of the movies made in 1969….but should cover the top box office movies.

Some all-time classics in this picture….all made in 1969.

Our UMR Top 50 of 1969

1969 Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort 1969 Movies by movie titles and movie trailers
  • Sort 1969 Movies by the stars or in some cases the director of the movie.
  • Sort 1969 Movies by domestic adjusted box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort 1969 Movies how they were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations each 1969 Movies received and how many Oscar® wins each 1969 Movies received.
  • Sort 1969 Movies by Ultimate Movie Ranking Score (UMR).  Our UMR score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

    1. Hey Sidney…same issue with the comma here as well. If time permits this weekend I will see if I can get WoC to take a look at the comma issue. Granted…..we are having an issue with Judi Dench and Shakespeare In Love that is taking all of her time, when she does maintenance on the website. Thanks for the head’s up.

  1. Hello
69 , A very exciting year for so many reasons!
About films, My fav film BUTCH of course whith this incrédibile trio Newman, Redford and Ross, and of course Z a french film with Yves Montand and without forgetting Bob, Carole etc
About Ross, i am very surprised that she was in some smash hit, and then …..At the end of the seventies …..nothing, like others stars of the same time, Ali Mac graw, Jennifer o neal, Candice Bergen, and even Faye Dunaway, it was very hard for her after Mommie Dearest.
I saw twenty films for that year who are on this page but at that time i saw a lot of french and italian films
A very good page , always good for memory,
I am not sur but in think i saw. Paint you wagon, if the actress is Ann Margret, en français, les voleurs de trains
    A bientot

  2. Thanks for completing the 1960s with the final comprehensive annual page of the decade!

Looking at the box office numbers though, it seems the decade may have ended with its worse year. For instance, only 19 movies grossing over $100 million in adjusted box office, which I believe is the lowest of the decade. So I do not feel bad that my count of movies seen from the list has gone down to 26 🙂

Still, the top 3 box office hits are classics which strongly evoke the late 1960s: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Midnight Cowboy, and Easy Rider. I would put these 3 somewhere in my top 10 list for the year and complete the list with The Wild Bunch, Z, They Shoot Horses Don’t They, Support Your Local Sheriff, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Marlowe, and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, which along with Goldfinger is my favorite Bond film.

    1. Hey PhilHOF17
      1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on 1969 movies.
      2. Yep….this closes up the 4th decade of movies…..I remember when I pick 1946 to experiment with….I had no idea I would do so many years…..but at this point…..I think it would be cool to connect with Box Office Mojo’s 1980s lists.
      3. Yep….$100 million dollar movies were pretty rare…..I think this time period is one of the worst financially for the movie industry……but Jaws….6 years later would save them.
      4. Of your Top 10….I have seen all of them except for Marlowe….I know I am disappointed too….lol. And I call myself a James Garner fan.
      5. I did not like Easy Rider at all…..only when Jack is on screen….do I find the movie even remotely interesting…..but I know how groundbreaking this movie was…..and how it was important to so many people back then.
      6. Dennis Hopper had some crazy ideas about an Easy Rider 2 movie……things like they were in outer space…..now that would have been fun to se.
      7. Tally count of 26 puts you near the bottom of the counts….but not far behind me, Flora and Steve….as we are at 34,32 and 31.
      Good feedback as always.

      1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on my comments Bruce. Yeah, I liked Easy Rider, but I would not say it’s one of my favorite films. I think the fact that it just made my top 10 further shows that 1969 was not a great year (apart from my wife being born of course – 🙂 ). Marlowe is good, but not a great movie either, and I have to admit that I like it mainly because of James Garner’s acting and a couple of scenes with Bruce Lee.

        1. Hey PhilHOF17…..thanks for the additional thoughts on Easy Rider and Marlowe….Marlowe is still the movie I most want to see of Garner’s that I have not seen. One day….which will probably make Steve happy….I will do a Bruce Lee page. Good stuff.

  3. In 1969 I saw The Love Bug at Radio City Music Hall. Went to Hook, Line and Sinker the 2nd Jerry Lewis picture I saw. I’ve related on the Pink Panther Page of seeing Take the Money and Run in 1975 with Return of the Pink Panther. Told you on some other page of seeing the first on screen breast I saw in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie stuck in as a sneak preview with My Side of the Mountain and Hello Down There (both g-rated movies I think). I think there were 80 or so G rated releases from the major studios in 1969! Remember seeing True Grit, The Assassination Bureau, The Christmas Tree, Death Rides a Horse and Young Billy Young in theaters then (why the last 4, probably bottom halves of double bills). Saw Hello Dolly, Butch Cassidy, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Elvis’ Change of Habit, The Trouble with Girls and Charro way back in the 70’s on TV.

Since December 1992 I have seen 79 1969 films for the first time. Key is film, studio, stars if listed, date seen and source (TV channel, DVD or tape)/

    1. Hey Dan…..79 is easily the best tally given so far….but like many others….that total is getting smaller as we approach the 1970s. Great movie memories of your movie watching “career”. I agree it seems almost every movie back then got a G rating….now almost every movie gets a PG or higher rating. I bet seeing movies at Radio City Music Hall must have been awesome…..if only for the history of the building. Good information, list and memory sharing. You are the man!

      1. From “The Family Guide to Movies on Video’ published 1988 the following 61 movies from 1969 were rated G.

        YOUNG BILLY YOUNG

        From the same book, the following 17 movies from 1969 and also rated by the Catholic Legion of Decency were originally rated X. A few had their ratings later changed (the newer rating follows some films). Last Summer had its rating changed 3 times;

        ACTIVIST, THE X
        ADALEN ’31 X
        ALL THE LOVING COUPLES X
        BEST HOUSE IN LONDON X
CAN HEIRONYMUS MERKIN X then R
        I AN CURIOUS (YELLOW) X
I MARRIED YOU FOR FUN X
        IF X then R
KILLING OF SISTER GEORGE X then R
LAST SUMMER X to R to GP back to R
        LAUGHTER IN THE DARK X
        LOVE IN OUR TIME X
        MEDIUM COOL X to R
        MIDNIGHT COWBOY X to R
        MIRACLE OF LOVE X
        SEX OF ANGELS, THE X
SWEDEN, HEAVEN AND HELL X then R

        1. Hey Dan…..thanks for the “Ratings” for these 1969 movies. I think Midnight Cowboy’s X rating is the most famous X rating of all-time. The only other X rated movie I am aware of is Medium Cool…which seemed more like a documentary than a movie. The Last Summer had to it’s rating changed three times?….very intertesting. Today the same movie would probably rated PG.
