    BRUCE

1 I agree with you about Zulu and the Harry Palmer movies – I loved Ipcress File. The late Sir Stanley Baker who produced Zulu and who apparently personally selected Sir Maurice for his part in the movie was being interviewed on TV some years later and the subject of Sir Maurice came up. Stanley told his interviewer about another movie producer who praised him for “making a star out of Michael Caine.” According to Sir Stanley he replied “You say that again and I’ll spit in your eye. Michael became a star because of his considerable talent and not because of me.”

2 Dirk Bogarde was a wonderful actor who was a Top 10 British box office star for 10 years and was also except in the US a Top 10 International star on 5 occasions. . Unfortunately although there were efforts to promote his career in the States he unlike Sir M and Sir Sean did not seem to have the kind of personality that Americans could take to in a significant way at the
    box office.

3 The precise definition of of the science fiction genre is not an issue for me and as long as I can keep getting those marvellous stats in your sci fi page call them westerns if you wish.

      Hey Bob.
1, First of all….finally done with my science fiction page….seems I have been working on that for the last two weeks.
      2. Sir Stanley certainly helped Caine get started….but it is cool he felt that way about Caine.
      3. Good stats on Dirk. Yep….not thinking too many Americans would be able to id Mr. Bogarde….especially compared to the The Man Who Would Be King co-stars.
      4. I am sure some will be disappointed that superhero movies did not make my list….while others will question why a movie made the list…but I like the massive table I have…there are thousands of stats on that table.

        GOOD EVENING BRUCE

1 Whilst he was not a US box office star the American cinema did provide Dirk with a degree of REFLECTED glory because he quipped once that many flans would write to him as Mr Humphrey Bogarde or Mr Dirk Bogart !

2 In 1977 he conceded that he was no longer box office anywhere but thought that because he still had a certain PRESTIGE value.he was given a role in A Bridge Too Far; and under alphabetical billing his name came first above such Greats as Redford, Hackman and Sir Maurice. See Wikipedia poster.

3 His career ended well enough as he joined the select group of British actor knights and gave my list of Top 5 favourite British stars added symmetry – Sir Dirk Bogarde, Sir John Mills, Sir Alec Guinness , Sir Maurice Micklewhite and Sir Sean Connery.

          Hey Bob.
          1. Funny that Bogarde would get Bogart’s fan mail.
          2. I have noticed many times how Bogarde got that prime real estate on A Bridge Too Far…as a kid…I had no idea who he was…Caine and Caan I knew but not Dirk.
          3. Good to know he was knighted…..and you have him listed with some all time greats.
          🙂

The late great Philip Seymour Hoffman, his star was rising and rising and suddenly he was gone… it’s a cruel world.

For some odd reason I used to think Hoffman was gay, maybe it was some of the roles he played, and than one day I discovered he had a girlfriend and three children. How wrong was I.

I’ve seen 20 of the 47 films listed, favorites include – Boogie Nights, Capote, Mission Impossible III, Twister, Almost Famous, Red Dragon, The Big Lebowski and Catching Fire (the best of the Hunger Games series).

I’ll recommend – Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead – for anyone who wants to see something offbeat and with a great cast of characters.

Noteworthy films I’ve missed – Moneyball, Nobody’s Fool and The Master.

Catching Fire tops the UMR and Critics charts, whoa didn’t expect that, especially considering some of the critically praised films Hoffman has appeared in like Capote, Boogie Nights and Magnolia. But I enjoyed Catching Fire more than the others in the Hunger Games series so no complaints here. It couldn’t beat Twister at the box office though, that was a freak success back in the 90s, only Independence Day topped it in 1996.

That’s enough mumbling from me, another excellent movie page Bruce. Voted Up!

      Hey Steve
      1. You are right…it is a cruel world.
      2. One of the saddest things about his death…was that he was discovered when he was late to pick up his kids…..those poor kids will have that as one of their last memories of him.
      3. My tally is at 40…..though that is about to go to 41 as I have God’s Pocket sitting by the DVD player….and ready to watch.
      4. Of the three movies you mentioned….I think you will like Nobody’s Fool…..one of Newman’s last great roles. I did not like The Master at all.
      5. Before the Devil Knows You Are Dead is excellent….I second your recommendation.
      6. I was also surprised to see that Catching Fire did so well…..granted his other Hunger Games movies did not do so well in the rankings.
      7. Twister got me to the “cinema” twice….and it was packed theater…sorry cinema both times.
Thanks for sharing you mumbling so.
