John Ireland (1914-1992) was an Oscar®-nominated Canadian-American actor.  Ireland was the first Vancouver-born actor to receive an Oscar® nomination.  He mainly appeared in supporting roles from the 1940s to the 1990s.   His IMDb page shows 203 acting credits from 1945 to 1992.  This page will rank John Ireland movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. 1.  John Benjamin Ireland was born in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1914.   He lived in New York City from a very early age. Ireland’s formal education ended at the 7th grade, and he worked to help his family make ends meet.

2.  John Ireland was the older half-brother of actor Tommy Noonan.

3. Performing as a swimmer in a water carnival, John Ireland moved into the legitimate theater, often appearing in minor roles in Broadway plays. His first big break came in 1945 when he appeared as Windy the introspective letter-writing G.I. in the classic war epic 1945’s A Walk in the Sun.

4. John Ireland appeared in the two classic westerns about the famous shootout in Tombstone, Arizona: “Gunfight at the OK Corral” and “My Darling Clementine.” He was a member of the Clanton gang in both films.

5.  John Ireland directed two movies:  1953’s Hannah Lee: An American Primitive and 1954’s The Fast and the Furious.

  1. “I’m Spartacus!” I’ve seen 13 of the 52 films on the chart, less than I thought. Favorites are – Spartacus, Fall of the Roman Empire, 55 Days at Peking, Red River, Gunfight at the OK Corral and My Darling Clementine.

    Spartacus tops all the charts, as it should. Ireland was particularly good as Kirk Douglas nemesis in Gunfight at the OK Corral, along with Clementine and Red River three of my all time favorite westerns.
