  1. Hi, general idea which I wanted to check with you. Is it possible to add a “last updated” information on every yearly chart whenever an update is done (to see the date when the last update was done for the respective data)?

  2. The data for the early years here is far more robust than I’ve ever seen elsewhere. Where is it sourced from? Does such data also exist even earlier, or is 1926 when it begins?

I appreciate any info, thanks for bringing us this very impressive resource!

    1. Hey Shaun…..the information comes from lots of different sources. MGM ledgers, RKO ledgers, Warner Brothers Ledgers, Variety Yearly Reports, Variety Weekly Reports, Books, Articles. Some sources are better than others. Been collecting this information for over 12 years now…including some cross country trips to see the ledgers with my own eyes. Glad you like our page. But…just so you know…these are our estimates….though we fell they are good estimates. Anybody that says they are the actual numbers is someone not looking at the big picture.

      1. That is amazing. So this website is not only a very cool resource for movie fans, but also a monument to years of legwork and original research!

If you ever feel inclined to share what you’ve compiled from 1925 on back, it would instantly eclipse the scant info available elsewhere. I have a goal to watch some top grossers from each year of movie history to chart the evolution of pop cinema culture, but that idea never seemed really possible until seeing your data.

Of course, I bet it would be crushing to see how many of those top grossers from early on don’t even exist anymore. Wish I had a time machine!

Is there any elusive ledger/archive that you hope to see someday, but didn’t get to access yet? I bet those studio ones are closely guarded.

      2. Do you track a full list of the sources you’ve used? Having that information would be invaluable so that your results can be better understood or even replicated as all good science and research should be able to.

        1. Hi Bobby,

I help with some of the data provided.
The years from 1920-1979 are best found in Variety Magazine.
They provide a weekly estimated Box Office data from over 200 movie theaters shown in large cities from around the USA and Canada.
They also provide Box Rental data on the top movies.
The earlier years where there is no Box Office Rental data from around 1920-1929, have to be reviewed manually to come up with estimated Box Office Rental.
The best way to find a lot of those Variety issues is on Wikipedia. They are free to peruse
Thats my 2 cents worth of info.
Hope this helps. and have fun its all good stuff. ,

          1. Hi Mike, thanks for responding. The Variety archives are helpful, but I was hoping for a more thorough response. For example, where more information on the three big ledgers, such as the Eddie Mannix ledger, could be accessed, and if there are more ledgers out there. Or if there are books or other documents out there that could also be checked.
