To make this list a movie had to be made in 1984. Obviously many movies made in 1983 earned box office dollars in 1984. On the other side many movies made in 1984 made money in 1985 and later. This page will looks at over 170 movies made in 1984. The movies are listed in two massive tables that lets you rank the movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.
Our UMR Top 50 of 1984

- Sort 1984 Movies by domestic adjusted box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)

- Sort by how many Oscar® nominations each 1984 Movies received and how many Oscar® wins each 1984 Movies received.

I saw 41, including top 12.10s and favorites: ghost busters, terminator, places in the heart, Beverly hills cop. 10: killing field. 9s: Amadeus,1984, garbo talks, natural, red dawn, dune, buckaroo bonsai, sixteen candles. my nines are very generous in 1984 and I need to revisit to see if they stand the test of time. I also enjoyed blame it on rio , harry and son , and the river. all 3 outside of the UMR top 70 along with garbo talks my hidden gem. a lot of coming of age fluff in 1984 that I possibly overrated, hmmmm.
great comments everyone. thank you cogerson. just a few more annual pages and you can generate pages for every actor with no further box office research. great job. great page. great total over 100, beautiful, almost Dan-like (133 approx. for 1984). yea Dan
is judge reiholds total bo a mistake?
ahhh, I see gremlins and Beverly hills cop . got it . reihold number 2.
silly bob, a cogerson mistake, unheard of.
Hey bob cox….the big issue with our UMR table is that it is “raw” stats…..there is no editing ont he list….it is just the Top 25…..and it does not care if you were in a supporting role or a leading role…so Judge lucked out…lol.
Hey bob cox…..only 41?….why that is almost 60 behind my total….just joking….not sure this was a great year for movies….but it was when I was going to theaters on a regular basis. I like all of your 10s….though Places in the Heart is not a movie I watch regularly. I actually just re-watched Beverly Hills Cop a couple of weeks ago….Murphy is still funny….but the detective part of the story is pretty weak. Steve will be happy to see his Dune with a 9. Garbo Talks was an enjoyable movie….but it has been years since I saw it. As for Judge….he has two blockbusters in 1984….Gremlins and BHC….at least his part in Cop was bigger…he is barely in Gremlins.

I saw Under the Volcano & The Evil That Men Do In LIsbon (Men was a few weeks before opening in the U.S.). I saw Supergirl in Madrid about 3 months before it opened in America (one seen at a party a lady ate a bug and the scene was not in the American print). I saw Supergirl later again in America with a friend of mine (and to see it in English). The films in Portugal were in English with subtitles.

Hey Dan….wow…it looks like my return comment has disappeared….so attempt 2. I was all proud of hitting triple digits…and then you come and put my total to shame….lol. The amount of movies you have seen always impresses me…..and even more impressive is that you have seen them in awesome places like Madrid. The missing movies…were ones that got deleted…but the table is now showing 182 movies for this year. A round of UMR applause to year for being such an impressive cinephile.
