    1. Hey Flora…thanks for checking out our Robert Morley page. Tally count: Bob with the lead with 22, Flora in second with a close 19 and Cogerson in third with 11. I have seen 4 of your favorites and 2 of your “others”. Somehow I have managed not to see Woman Times Seven….one of the few Caine movies I have not seen. One day I will track that one down. Good stuff as always.

  2. ADDITIONAL TRIVIA

1/The Doctor’s Dilemma starring Leslie Caron and my Dirk is from a George Bernard Shaw play [a satire on the medical profession of Shaw’s time] and not to be confused with the comedy “Doctor” series of which Doctor in Trouble listed by Bruce is a part. Leslie Caron said at the time that she feared so much for Doctor’s Dilemma at the box office that she hoped the public WOULD think it was one of her co-star Sir Dirk Bogarde’s films in that popular “Doctor” series.

2/By the way Leslie Phillips not mentioned by WH took over the Doctor role from Dirk In Doctor in Trouble whereas unsuspecting viewers might think that Graham Chapman or Morley himself is the star of the latter movie. The Work Horse seems to get a lot of fun in keeping his viewers guessing in such matters!

3/The Alphabet Murders is an awful film; a travesty of Agatha Christie’s classic book; and Tony Randall made Christie’s famous brilliant fictional sleuth genius Hercule Poirot look like a nincompoop. In the 1972 crime film called Sleuth Lord Olivier’s Andrew Wyke tried to murder Sir Maurice Micklewhite’s Milo Tindle for merely sneering at novelist Wyke’s Great Detective Singen Lord Merridew. Joel Hirschhorn also tried to murder Brando; but we’ll have to settle here for the low 52% review rating that Bruce’s sources have given Randall’s disgraceful Alphabet Murders. Well done Work Horse!!

4/In Alphabet Murders Morley plays Captain Hastings who in the Christie books is Poirot’s Dr Watson-type sidekick. Accordingly Dan will no doubt be quick to spot that Morley has played foil to arguably the two greatest detectives in fictional literature: Mycroft Holmes to Sherlock; and Captain Hasting to Hercule Poirot.

    1. Hey Bob…good thoughts on the The Doctor’s Dilemma and The Alphabet Murders. I liked the book but I have not seen the movie…and based on your comment…that is a good thing. As for Leslie Phillips….sorry…we do not have a page on him….so he is not eligible for the UMR Co-Star column….but Graham Chapman has an UMR page. Good stuff as always.

I can see where you are coming from but unfortunately it’s still in my estimation very misleading. As stardom is what movies are really all about – and indeed one could say that it is the raison detre of your site and books –it might perhaps be useful if at some stage you could think about a slightly revised format that can inform your viewers on who the precise stars of a movie are.

As it is even where a lead thespian in a film DOES have a link page you often as I see it compound the confusion by ignoring him/her in favour of someone like Bruce Willis or Myrna Loy whose names [and those of certain others] you seem to have a liking for dropping endlessly throughout the site regardless of their contribution to a particular film.

In my own databases Brando for example gets the credit for A Dry White Season in his own personal slot; but elsewhere [despite his best supporting actor nom] he is ignored in favour of the movie’s stars Donald Sutherland and Janet Suzman as Marlon is just 8th billed in the cast.

  4. About halfway through the Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes stories Dr Watson who of course narrates the Holmes adventures in the books tells readers that he was amazed to discover that Sherlock actually has a brother – who is called Mycroft Holmes.

Apparently Mycroft is even cleverer than his genius brother but is lazy so he can’t be bothered to do detective work that involves leaving his comfort zone; but Sherlock often consults Mycroft when a case is causing The Great Detective himself special problems. Accordingly down the years Mycroft has often amusingly been referred to by some people as “Sherlock Homes’ smarter brother”!

In 1965’s A Study in Terror Morley plays Mycroft with gusto and John Neville is Sherlock. I liked the film and Bruce gives it a passable 65% rating in his tables above.

Probably my own fave Morley performance is as Oscar Wilde in the 1960 film of that name. Unfortunately the same year The Trials of Oscar Wilde starring Peter Finch as Oscar was released to compete with the Morley version and the critics at the time marginally favoured the Finch one. IMDB currently gives Morley’s film a 69% rating and Finch’s version 71%

However The Work Horse’s sources see it differently: Morley a respectable 67%/ & Finch a less than good 58%. Therefore you could say that WH leans towards me a good bit on this one. The 22 Morley films that I have seen are listed in Part 2.

    1. Hey Bob….thanks for the additional information on Robert Morley. Good mini-review of his role as Mycroft Holmes. When researching this page I read about the two Wilde movies…apparently Morse’s Wilde was the lower budget one, but neither movie did well at the box office. 22 is a good number of movies seen….much higher than my 11. Proof that my personal opinion is not in the rankings… I love Loophole but it’s 39% review score sentenced it to the bottom of the rankings.
