The more modern we get the less chance I have seen them since I hit film 8000 in December 1992. I saw Bon Voyage and Moon Pilot on the Wonderful World of Disney. I saw To Kill a MOckingbird on the local 4:30 movie when we just had to read it for school. I saw How the West was Won and The Music Man on TV when I was young too. I went to Dr. No in 1971 double billed with 1963’s From Russia with Love just before ABC bought the bond films. Lawrence of Arabia I bought on videotape in 1991 just before I got cable. Also saw the Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm at a kiddie matinee in 1971 where if you stayed you could see the R rated Friends. I couldn’t convince the other kids to stay. Since December 1992 I have seen 105 1962 films for the first time. It will probably drop to double figures in 1963.

I also saw Safe at Home and The Three Stooges Meet Hercules in summer camp in the mid to late 60’s.

Very very cool. I am sure I have seen parts of The Three Stooges Meet Hercules….but not enough of it to claim it on my tally count. 🙂

Hey Dan…..thanks for the quality lists about 1962 movies. So by 1963 your numbers might fall below 100……on the other side of the seesaw….it might take until the late 1970s or early 1980s before I reach 100 on these pages. Interesting viewing stories on Bon Voyage, Lawrence, Wonderful World of Grim and To Kill A Mockingbird.

War Hunt has to be one of Robert Redford’s first movies. Good stuff as always.

      Hey Flora
      1. Thanks for sharing your movie thoughts.
      2. Wow….I had not realized you had not seen Brando’s Mutiny on the Bounty……..it looks amazing….at least on the blu-ray I looked at.
      3. 60% of the Top 50….not as good as the last page….but still pretty impressive.
      4. Your 45 tops me and Steve….but we are not too far behind you….as Steve is at 36 and I am at 35.
      5. I have seen all of your Top 10…..Lawrence Killed A Mockingbird with The Manchurian Candidate and The Music Man would be amongst my favorites as well.
      6. Good to see Kirk Douglas’ Lonely Are The Brave getting some attention…a very good movie.
      Great stuff as always.

I’ve seen 36 of the 108 films listed. Lawrence of Arabia is my favorite movie from this year and in my top 5 for the decade.

Other faves include – Dr. No, Premature Burial, Cape Fear, Hatari, How the West Was Won, The Longest Day, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Ride the High Country, Taras Bulba, Night of the Eagle, The Manchurian Candidate, Mutiny on the Bounty and To Kill a Mockingbird.

Whoa some great films there, 1962 was a vintage year for cinema.

Lawrence tops all the UMR charts including box office, how often does that happen?

An epic movie page Bruce, filled with stats. A Big Vote Up!

Hey Steve….so close….I have seen 35 of these movies….just one spot behind you. Lawrence is one of my favorites too. As you pointed out…it tops all the categories….which very rarely happens. It takes an all-time classic like this one to accomplish this feat.

I have almost all of your favorites…though Night of the Eagle is not registering with me at all. Thanks for the vote up and for the visit.

1 As you know unlike you and others I’m not one for boasting how many movies I’ve seen [for one thing it is a pointer to how old I’m getting!] but I’ve seen 9 of the 10 best reviewed movies in your 1962 annual survey, the odd man out being Long Day’s Journey into Night. I make that point to suggest that as you movie further into your Reviews of the more modern years it is likely that an increasing number of your viewers will be personally familiar with a greater number of the movies listed.

2 Your annual reviews are also clearly illustrating how we were often in the past being misled about the stretgth of a movie’s earnings or at least were not being given a complete picture. For example in the early days the only figure we could get for the 1962 Mutiny on the Bounty was Variety’s quotation of an actual US RENTAL of $9.8 million [and historian and author David Shipman also used that figure].

3 Subsequently new Internet sites such as IMDB and the Numbers quoted, and still do, a US GROSS of $13.6 million for the 1962 Bounty but that always seemed to me too low for a rental of $9.8 yet Wikipedia continues to quote both $9.8 rental/13.6 million gross as actuals.

4 Morevover the Bounty remake though over-expensive to produce was always said by Wiki and others to be among the half dozen or so top grossing movies of 1962 and in the company of such mint makers as Duke’s Longest Day and Grant/Doris’ Touch of Mink. Therefore as other sites broadly agree with your actual figures for those movies your actual figure for Bounty seems to me to be of the proper scale.

5 Certainly if anyone tries to get you to reduce those Mumbles figures it’s not going to be ME !!! though your review page would still have that nice miniature still of Mr M in effect instigating the mutiny. Actually on its 1962 Bounty page IMDB had a still of Gable presumably from the 1935 version instead of the Great Mumbler when I last looked. Ah! Is ANYONE ever going to give my Mumbler his COMPLETE due?

Hey Bob….glad you liked this yearly review. I agree with your thinking that the closer we get to 2018…the more the readers will connect with the movies. On the other hand…. so far….with 39 years done…..the top two view getters are the 1939 and 1946 pages…..with 1952 coming in third….so there are people interested in those years.

Mutiny on the Bounty got some butts in the seats for sure…..but like Cleopatra…people could not get over the cost of the movie….you can add Waterworld into that discussion as well…..in the end…they all made a boatload of money…..just not enough to cover the massive costs.

As for Marlon…..I think we give him his due……he is without a doubt one of the legends of the acting world. Good stuff.

    Hello Bruce.
I like this page and I only find one error in it. “The Interns” was a big hit with $5,000,000 in domestic rentals. Why it was a hit I can’t fathom. It’s pure soap opera. Is 2.85 the equation you used to arrive at the grosses? Nice page Bruce. I’ve really enjoyed 1933 through 1939 pages.

Hey Lyle…..good catch. I actually put the rental number in the wrong box….I caught my mistake….but when I fixed it……I did not notice the database did not accept the change until going back after reading your comment….so thanks for the headsup. Glad you have enjoyed the 1930s pages….planning on knocking out the rest of that decade in the next couple of weeks.

We currently have 38 yearly reviews……slowly it has been expanding. Good to hear from you.
