Hey Mike….spelling errors fixed. Wedding in Monaco added….Guys and Dolls and The Partying Crashers moving to different pages…it will take an entire website update for the last two things to happen. Good catches.
Anytime
Thx
Mike
Hey Mike….fixed, updated and all co-star columns updated…so we now have 183 movies on this page….not too bad if I say so myself.
“The King and the Four Queens” should be “The King and Four Queens”
“Great Train Locomotive Chase” should be “The Great Locomotive Chase”
Hey Sidney….both of these errors are fixed….at this point….I have just been fixing them immediately versus verifying they were wrong. Thanks for the headsup.
Hey Bob……Variety in it’s annual Top Grossers 1956 movie issue (January 2nd, 1957)…listed Guys and Dolls as the number one movie with a rental figure of 9.0 million with Trapeze being in third place with 7.5 million. When you look at other Variety issues (February 24th, 1992) that came out later…Guys and Dolls’ rental number dropped to $6,874673…while Trapeze’s dropped too, but not as much…$7,269,464. That explains how Trapeze is higher. As for the others…..the Top 4 on the Variety Top Grossers of 1957 are Ten Commandments, Around the World in 80 Days, Giant and Seven Wonders of the World…all released in late 1956, and did not make list. As for the The King and I…it’s last rental number given is $8,500,000…..which is actually up, when looking at the original estimates.
So….yes when Variety listed the Top Grossers…Guys and Dolls was number one….at least in the calendar year…..but 7th when looking at all 1956 movies. Hope that helps…..school comes a callin’.
BRUCE
Thanks – that clarifies matters.
HI WORK HORSE [plus,plus, plus]
Your pupil requires your assistance again!
Your Annual Reviews are so detailed and comprehensive that I find myself constantly dipping into them and discovering new things all the time. Have to keep my eye out too for “Gabby Hayes” type puzzles!
It just struck me in re-visiting 1956 that you have on some page on this site referred to Guys and Dolls as “the top money maker of 1956” and indeed down the years Variety too has given it that accolade.
Now you come along and list G & D as 7th in the above chart and paling to insignificance almost in comparison with Chuck’s10 Cmts.
Win/win for me of course as you have placed in your Top 7 my great Biblical hero and my other idol, the screen’s greatest orator AND dancer AND singer! [what a multi-talented guy Steve- sorry Gene can’t quire cut the top spot!]
However the 64 dollar question is how do you and Variety make G &; D, relatively excellent though its gross is, out to be the “greatest money maker of 1956”?
As I asked this question I found myself putting up my hand Teach! [“Permission to speak,” Sir!]
