  1. King of the Box Office Sam Jackson gets his page updated. [cue Bob groaning] 🙂

Someone should work out how many films Jackson was the lead male actor in and tot up the grosses, then we’ll find out if he’s box office king.

His box office counterpart Myrna Loy was the lead actress in most of her big hits, while Jackson was happy to support in most of his.

I’ve seen 58 of the 96 films listed here, most recently Skull: Kong Island.

    Good work Bruce. Vote Up.

    1. STEVE

There is almost a case for a separate league of actors/actresses who were predominately in supporting roles but strong ones and who were in movies that racked up large grosses. The kind of people I have in mind are Samuel L, Thelma Ritter, Walter Brennan and one of your video top sellers Tony Quinn. That raises an interesting question. Rutger Hauer never made top stardom in the cinema but for a number of years I think he was King of the Straight to Video. If Quinn were about today would his career mirror Rutger’s career?

  2. HI Bruce:

1 Move over Duke the Greatest Male Box Office Star of All Time has arrived in town. That’s what they call Sam at times before adjusting for inflation and when you do adjust he probably lies about 4th in your ranking list if you take his stats at face value.

2 However I think that we are both agreed this time that he was in so many supporting roles that although he deserves a lot of credit for his contribution it would be a stretch to regard him as a great box office star in his own right in the league of say Hanks or Harrison Ford? Also once you get outside Sam’s top 40 the turkeys start appearing thick and fast so that by the time you get to the bottom of the list they wouldn’t have the strength to squawk even if it was Christmas and indeed they look as if they might have been pinched from Nicolas Cage’s page.

3 Nevertheless thanks to your comprehensive work in setting out all of them on the one page I can’t help being impressed by the enormous effort Jackson must have expended in building up such a massive personal filmography and the Oscar and Golden Globe noms that you mention also give him the deserving reputation of being a fine actor. I have therefore found this updated profile of another great African American film star.very interesting and informative. Do you know if he has ever been listed in Quigley?

  3. I have seen 75 of the films listed, as well as an additional 7 not listed. Of the ones I haven’t seen, I have 10 on tape/disc waiting to be watched.

    1. Damn….foiled again….I am at 67 movies watched. Sounds like you have a serious collection of movies to watch. I get most of my movies from the libraries around me….but my queue is only about 9 movies total. Currently watching a horrible low budget crappy movie called Private Number ….because Judd Nelson was on the cover….seems another lifetime ago that Nelson was actually a popular movie actor.

  4. Yep Sam Jackson has made a lot of movies, a very busy actor. Always watchable never boring.

I had a feeling Pulp Fiction would top the UMR chart, probably his most famous film and I think the only film for which he was Oscar nominated. Jurassic Park was the biggest film he has appeared in, bigger than The Avengers? Oh in adjusted dollars, okay.

Let’s count them, I’ve seen… 50 of the 92 films you’ve listed. I’ve watched Jackson’s top 34 highest grossing worldwide movies, and only 16 from the remaining 58 films.

I liked him as Nick Fury in the Marvel superhero movies. And he was really good in Tarantino’s movies, most recently in The Hateful Eight, which I really enjoyed.

Another excellent addition to you movie site Bruce. Voted Up.

    1. Hey Steve….thanks for checking out this massively long movie page….92 movies! It actually takes a little time to do a tally count…lol. I am at 62 SLJ movies watched. When looking at worldwide gross I get stuck at #14….XXX. While you get stuck at Coach Carter.
Yep Jurassic World is ahead of Avengers when looking at adjusted gross…..but both were massive hits….then again….you can say that about many many SLJ. He has aged very gracefully….he does not look like a man pushing 70….I hope I can make that claim when I get to be his age.
I look forward to The Hateful Eight…I wonder if it is going to get some GoldenGlobe love tonight….and then some Oscar love next week.
Thanks for the visit and the comment….both are greatly appreciated.
