Finding box office information for movies made before 1980 is not an easy task.   For somebody looking for box office information on 1977 it is very very frustrating.  Over the years, we have researched and collected information on over 36,000 movies.  So we figured we would show all the 1977 movies in our database.

To make this list a movie had to be made in 1977.  This page will looks at 127 1977 Movies.  The movies are listed in a massive table that lets you rank the movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.    This only represents about 33% of the movies made in 1977….but should cover the top box office movies.

1977 Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort 1977 Movies by movie titles and movie trailers
  • Sort 1977 Movies by the stars or in some cases the director of the movie.
  • Sort 1977 Movies by domestic adjusted box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort 1977 Movies how they were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations each 1975 Movies received and how many Oscar® wins each 1977 Movies received.
  • Sort 1977 Movies by Ultimate Movie Ranking Score (UMR).  Our UMR score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

  2. I saw 27. including 20 of top 26. I give star wars a 10 but I loved close encounters and empire strikes back(not 77) much more. all 3 favourites . goodbye girl , a 10 and a favourite. annie hall is a ten but not a favourite. smokey and the bandit, an 8 and a favourite, thank you Jackie gleason and sally field. a bridge too far is a ten not a favourite. i loved Redford, Hopkins, Connery, Ullman, Olivier, caan, Schell, Kruger. not so much Caine ( Bruce puts me on double secret probation from further comments),nor O’Neil, Hackman, Gould, Farrell, bogarde. Richard Attenborough was perfect as lunatic wearing glasses cameo. I watched it last night. LOL. Julia 3 nights ago, Saturday night fever 3 weeks ago, Smokey and the bandit 3 months ago. yea UMR, great page. you “messed” up, you trusted me. when the “Germans” bombed pearl harbour. I obviously need an animal house fix.

    1. Hey bob cox
      1. 27 seen is not too far behind me.
      2. 20 of the Top 26 is pretty good.
      3. Lots of 10s for you..glad to see A Bridge Too Far as a 10.
      4. I have seen A Bridge Too Far many times….so I am happy to say no double secret probation for you….as I agree ….Michael Caine’s part is average at best.
      5. Anthony Hopkins has the best role in that movie. Sean Connery probably has the second best role. James Caan is good, but his scenes are few and far apart. He was the first actor I heard say the “f” word in a movie. That was in the scene with Caan and the doctor…which is my favorite scene in the movie.
      6. I remember the scene with Sir Richard….and Sean Connery’s line about the laughing mental patients knowing more than them.
      Good feedback.

  3. This is my lowest total yet. I’m not sure if this year will be my lowest total or 1978 will be my lowest total. I gather that once your finished with the 1970’s you are done with yearly reviews?

I have seen only 18 movies from 1977.That’s right. I’ve dipped below 20. I haven’t seen the blockbusters. I’ve never really been into modern blockbusters.

The highest rated film I have seen is The Goodbye Girl at number 3.

The highest rated film I have NOT seen is Star Wars.

The lowest rated film I have seen is Grand Theft Auto.

Here is my Views By Tens For the Top 30:

6 out of 10: The Goodbye Girl, Saturday Night Fever, Julia, The Rescuers, A Bridge Too Far, and Smokey and the Bandit
10 out of 20: The Spy Who Loved Me, Oh God!, Slap Shot, Pete’s Dragon
13 out of 30: High Anxiety, MacArthur, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.

Although I have seen Rollercoaster and enjoyed it, there are two other Richard Widmark movies I have not seen: Twilight’s Last Gleaming and The Domino Principle.

    My Top 6 1977 Movies:

    The Spy Who Loved Me
    Saturday Night Fever
    High Anxiety
    A Bridge Too Far
    MacArthur
    Rollercoaster

    1. That should read “you’re finished, not your finished” in the first paragraph. I did minor in English at University.

    2. Hey Flora….not sure where my return comment went to…..but somehow my comment has disappeared….so this will be attempt number 2.

      1. Thanks for the visit, the tally, the comment and for sharing your thoughts on our 1977 movie page.
      2. Yes your tally counts are getting lower….but you were a wee little baby when these movies came out….I was 10 back in 1977….and was going to theaters with my friends….so when you compare my 37 to your 18…I feel your tally is way more impressive than my total.
      3. As for the yearly reviews….we will be doing 1978 for sure….1980 is possibly too….as that would mean every year in my movie book when be in the database…the last year I have Variety yearly reviews is 1980….also doing a 1929 page is a strong possibility. Then I might take a break from yearly reviews…..but they are pretty popular…when I look at my Top 100 pages…yearly reviews have 19 of the Top 100 pages…with 1939 and 1946 being the most popular yearly pages.
      4. Still shocking to realize that you have not seen Star Wars yet…..maybe one day.
      5. I feel this was Richard Widmark’s last good year in movies…his roles and his movies really took a turn downhill from here.
      6. Of your favorites…A Bridge Too Far is one of my all-time favorite movies…and The Spy Who Loved Me is one of my all-time favorite James Bond movies.
      7. I was so excited to see High Anxiety…..and then when I finally saw it….I was disappointed. A recent re-viewing of that one did not good well either.
Thanks as always for your feedback.

      1. Thanks for your response Bruce and for letting us know what further years you will be doing. I have made comments that have disappeared too. I agree that 1977 was likely Richard Widmark’s last final good year. Hopefully, I will be able to find those two other films.

        1. Better late than never?….lol. Glad to share the plan of future UMR pages. It will be cool when I get the 1978 page done….then every year from 1930 to 1979 would be complete…50 years! Never thought it would be done.

  4. One of my favorite years – 1977 – the year of Star Wars… and Close Encounters… film heaven for a young sci-fi fan like Steve.

I’ve seen 49 of the 127 films listed, maybe more I can’t remember all the titles I’ve seen. Looking at my files I have 72 films from 1977 in my movie collection, I haven’t watched them all. Favorites are –

    Airport 77
    Black Sunday
    Bridge Too Far ,A
    Car ,The
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
    Cross of Iron
    Deep ,The
    Demon Seed
    Duellists ,The
    Eraserhead
    Gauntlet ,The
    High Anxiety
    Kentucky Fried Movie
    Orca Killer Whale
    Rescuers ,The
    Saturday Night Fever
    Sentinel ,The
Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger
    Smokey and the Bandit
    Spy Who Loved Me ,The
    Star Wars
    Twilight’s Last Gleaming
    Wizards
    zz-Italy – Suspiria

Happy to see Star Wars topping all the charts, Close Encounters did well too. Along with Jaws and Raiders of the Lost Ark my 3 favorite Spielberg movies.

I was heartbroken when Star Wars lost the Best Picture Oscar to Annie Hall the folllowing year, I thought it would be an easy win. Will sci-fi ever win Best Picture? Is The Shape of Water sci-fi or fantasy? I’d say more fantasy.

I saw 63 films at the cinema in 1977, some of them on double bills and some were repeat viewings.

Reissued movies I saw on the big screen in 1977 are –

    Ben-Hur (1959)
    Blazing Saddles
    Bullitt
    Clambake
Elvis on Tour (following Elvis death)
Fist of Fury (aka Chinese Connection)
    Follow That Dream
    Freebie and the Bean
French Connection (double bill with French Connection II)
    Godzilla vs the Smog Monster
    The Jungle Book (Disney)
    King Creole
    Mechanic ,The (Bronson)
    One Armed Boxer
    The Thing With Two Heads
    Thunderbolt and Lightfoot
    Young Frankenstein

Another expert movie year page Bruce (or should that be pages?). Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve. Wow….those are some great details you have of your movies watched in 1977. I bet Dan is impressed with record keeping for this year. I have seen 37 of the movies listed here….so I am pretty far behind you. I am disappointed in my totals…I figured it would be much higher.

I figured you would enjoy the two sci-fi classics having spots in the Top 4….with Star Wars getting the top spot….anything to make the sci-fi fans happy. The Car making your favorites list is interesting. I remember the classic line from that movie…James Brolin near the end of the movie screams….”Watch out…..the CAR is in the GARAGE!”….great stuff.

Sounds like your Oscar heartbreak for Star Wars was like my Oscar heartbreak for Raiders four years later….to the hell with Annie Hall and Chariots of Fire.

63 movies in the theater in one year….pretty impressive. Thanks for sharing these thoughts…..good feedback.
