Top Grossing 1996 Movies

To make this list a movie had to be made in 1996.  Obviously many movies made in 1995 earned box office dollars in 1996.  On the other side many movies made in 1996 made money in 1997 and later.   This page will looks at over 250 movies made in 1996.  The movies are listed in two massive tables that lets you rank the movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.

1996 Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort 1996 Movies by movie titles and movie trailers
  • Sort 1996 Movies by the stars or in some cases the director of the movie.
  • Sort 1996 Movies by domestic adjusted box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort 1996 Movies how they were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations each 1996 Movies received and how many Oscar® wins each 1996 Movies received.
  • Sort 1996 Movies by Ultimate Movie Ranking Score (UMR).  Our UMR score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

  1. Hello,
I have seen two films in movie theaters this year because my kids were so young so the others were on TV.
It was twister with Hunt and i like it and The first wives club for Midler but i think a part one or two scenes it was a little ennuyeux.
Anyway this is one of the first time that cinema and going to movie place was not important simply because i have work at home and i can say that i love it a lot to stay with my kids.
I notice in the second place the Patient Anglais with Binoche, a French actress who got the oscar for the second part.
By the way, for the story, when i was student i work in a big store in the banlieue of Paris just on Saturday and monday and she was working full time in the same big store and she was waiting for her time so we had lunch together sometimes and of course we spoke a lot of movie and ….castings.
    Bye
    Pierre

    1. Hey Pierre. It is always good to hear from you. I saw Twister in theaters as well. A fun popcorn movie. I thought First Wives Club had some funny moments. That was pretty much Goldie Hawn’s last hurrah. Her movies since that hit have been few and none have been box office hits. Thanks for sharing the memories of work, your kids and movies. That is awesome trivia about Binoche and you. That has to be a Top 10 memory for you (excluding family memories). Great feedback.

  2. Okaaay… I’ve seen… 61 of the 267 films on the chart… hmm less than I thought. Looking at my files I have 65 films from 1996 in my movie collection, still less than I thought. My favorites are…

    Broken Arrow
    Courage Under Fire
    Dragonheart
    Eraser
    Executive Decision
    Freeway
    Frighteners ,The
    From Dusk Till Dawn
    Hunchback of Notre Dame (Disney)
    Independence Day
    Jerry Maguire
    Long Kiss Goodnight ,The
    Mars Attacks!
    Mission Impossible
    Ransom
    Rock ,The
    Scream
Star Trek VIII – First Contact
    Twister
    zz-China – Black Mask
zz-Japan Anime – Macross Plus the Movie

Independence Day was a massive hit that year, for a while it was among the top 5 biggest films of all time, in unadjusted dollars. Now it’s probably not even in the top 30.

My most watched film of 1996 is easily Independence Day. I still watch it at least once a year. The sequel was quite bad. No.2 most watched is probably Star Trek First Contact, the best of the Next Gen movies. I enjoyed Mars Attacks! too. Well I am a sci-fi fan, that’s my excuse. 🙂

Top rated films of 1996 I haven’t seen include – Sling Blade, Secrets & Lies and Shine.

Another epic movie year page Bruce. Nice work. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve….only 61? That is a lot of movies….but I expected your tallies to be much much higher the closer we got to the current years. Granted….my tallies are experiencing the same thing. I wonder why that is the case? I mean the movies were pretty easy for us to see, as home entertainment was in full swing in 1996. I guess it will remain a mystery.

Seen all of your favorites except for the “zz” ones. I would put Twister, The Rock, Executive Decision, Jerry Maguire and The Frighteners are my favorites list too. I liked Independence Day…just did not love it. I was shocked that Star Trek: First Contact rated so highly. I know you love Mars Attacks…but with that cast…I felt it was a disappointing movie. As for the ones you missed…Sling Blade, Secrets & Lies and Shine…all were one and done movies for me.

      Good stuff as always.

  3. I have seen 11 films from 1996. Four of them are in the top 10.

    Basquiat

Top 10 Movies From 1996 I Have Seen:
    Jerry Maguire
    The English Patient
    The Birdcage
    Fargo

    Favourite 1996 Movies:
    Fargo
    Jerry Maquire
    The English Patient
    Evita
    The Birdcage

Other 1996 Movies I Have Seen:
    The First Wives Club
    Sling Blade
    Executive Decision
    Mars Attacks!
    Everyone Says I Love You
    Basquiat

    1. Hey Flora….my tally is higher than yours….but actually it seems a little on the low end. My tally barely reaches 100…as I have seen 102 of these movies. I figured that by the time we got to modern movies, my tally count would be in the 80 to 90 percent range…instead I am still in the low 40s when looking at percentages.

Of the 11 you have seen….I have seen them all except for Evita. I barely remember Basquiat. I did enjoy Jerry Maguire, Farco and Excecutive Decision. Surprised that Fargo was (a) seen by you and (b) made your favorites list…..but glad you did. Good feedback as always.

  4. HI BRUCE I have seen 14 of the highest Top 30 grossing movies in your chart, which is not bad at almost 50%. However if you Steve or Flora should feel puffed up with pride at beating that score let me recount to you what my son said once when I boasted that my DVD collection was larger than his. “Let’s put it this way dad–anything worth having is in MY collection!”-

Here are my top 12 faves in the table in no particular order with as usual some of my picks not scoring among the highest in your Review column. CR = Cogerson Rating

    Jerry Maguire – CR 82%
    Ransom
    A Time to Kill
    Eraser – CR 52%
    Executive Decision
One Fine Day – CR 54% – Cogerson knifes Gorgeous George again
Scream – CR 73% – Would be a good title for the 1983 Book of Terror
    Tin Cup
An Eye for an Eye – CR 52%
    City Hall
    Primal Fear
Hard 8 – CR 80% – congratulation on spotting this hidden gem.

I think the contrast at times between the top box office movies and the best reviewed movies illustrates how the tastes of the man in the street can differ in many respects from the professionals

Joel would have been delighted with how you got your knife into Brando’s The Island of Dr Moreau with a 30% rating, with which unfortunately I must agree – awful film! Burt Lancaster’s 1977 version did a lot better with you though you still considered it less than good with a 52% rating. IMDB is more generous than you but agrees that the Lancaster version is the better – 59% [ie almost good] against 45% for the Brando 1996 version.

    1. Hey Bob. Thanks for checking out of 1996 yearly review. Now 70% done with the 1990s. Good comeback by your son. I have seen all of your favorites. As for One Fine Day….I actually like that George Clooney movie…..one of the few that I would re-watch. Executive Decision was a good thriller…..Kurt Russell at his best. I agree with you thoughts on the “contrast differences between the public and the critics”. As for Dr. Moreau…..the Brando version is not only one of Marlon’s worst movies….but a candidate for worst big budget movie ever made. That entire movie is a train wreck. Good feedback as always.

      1. HI BRUCE. I’m pleased that for once you liked a movie starring Aunt Rosemary and Uncle Jose’s favourite nephew. Actually for once YOURS TRULY enjoyed a Stallone performance. Last night I watched Sly in 1995’s Assassins which unfortunately you give just a 34% rating and an adjusted domestic gross of only around $63 million.

However IMDB rates it slightly better than ‘good’ with 63% which is in my line with my personal assessment. Also whilst you don’t quote a global gross for it, figures provided by Wiki and The Numbers suggest that its worldwide gross was almost 3 times the domestic one [quite usual for an action-hero film these days- look at some of Willis’ monster foreign grosses] so that if we use their figures as a rough guide Assassins would have an adjusted worldwide gross of over $170 million, which is quite healthy for a movie that was not one of Sly’s top ones.

Congratulations on reaching 70% of annual reviews. I’m looking forward to the rest of them. Indeed your perseverance in completing these massive pages for the state of the movie marketplace decade-in-decade-out always reminds me of the Legend for Kids of Robert the Bruce and the Spider which seems to suggest guys named Bruce will always succeed no matter how daunting the task! Maybe Hirsch was your inspirational Spider – sounds just about right!

‘HUNDREDS of years ago there was a king of Scotland and his name was Robert the Bruce. Six times Robert the Bruce had led his brave little army against his foes. Six times his men had been beaten. One rainy day, Robert the Bruce lay in a cave, tired, sick at heart and ready to give up all hope. Suddenly he noticed a spider over his head, getting ready to weave her web. Six times she tried to throw her thread from one edge of the cave wall to another. Six times her thread fell short, but the spider did not lose hope and the seventh time was successful “Yes!” cried Bruce, “I, too, will try a seventh time!” and this time he succeeded.

PS Glad that my name is linked albeit fictionally with this site’s guru – ie ROBERT the Bruce!

          1. HI BRUCE Thanks for feedback and the Assassins trailer link. I see that your adjusted worldwide gross is almost identical to my own “guesstimate”. The reason for that is largely because I originally took the suggested actual worldwide gross form Wiki and The Numbers and calculated it pro-rata against your adjusted actual and adjusted domestic gross figures for Assassins. However I always like to have your precise WW figures if I can get them because WW figures quoted elsewhere are often unreliable and even contradictory

I will always have fond feelings for Braveheart as apparently it would never have come to fruition but for the efforts of Alan Ladd Jr [its associate producer] – Mel’s company Icon co-produced it with Laddie Junior’s The Ladd Company. By coincidence around the time of its release Gibson was interviewed on TV about it and [in which context I forget] Mel referred to Alan Ladd SENIOR’s shortness of stature.

That issue has always seemed to have blighted Ladd Snr’s legacy. I like the quote [a short time after The Godfather was released and Pacino shot to stardom and cinematic glory] from an old college mate of Al Pacino [just three quarters of an inch taller than Laddie Sr who was 5ft 6 and a quarter]- “In the college locker room we used to call Pacino Little Al – he’s Big Al NOW!”

          2. Hey Bob…I have found that the trailer pages are a great place to have the worldwide grosses shown. Only a few of our pages have worldwide grosses listed in the table. Mainly because it creates to many lines that repeat information (adjusted domestic and adjusted worldwide would have same number). Good stuff on Ladd Jr., Braveheart and Ladd Sr.’s “shortcomings”. Good stuff.

  5. This page has actually been sitting on the yearly ranking page for about a week. Figured it was time to start sharing the link. Will catch up on the way to airport. WoC had to go to New Orleans (computer programming emergency). She comes back today.

As for the page. Looking at the Top 10….I would say this is one of the weakest years we have ever done. I like the movies in the Top 10…..just do not love any of them. Happy Saturday.
