Hey Dan. Thanks for these epic lists. My tally actually fell below 100 on this year…which surprised me. I see your totals remain “in the clouds”…..seeing more in theaters than I have in all modes of movies…theater, cable, dvd, vhs and internet.
I am sure most of the readers here at UMR are very envious of the fact that you have spent so much time in Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens and Long Island. I can only guess how many options you had each and every week….especially if you had the option and time to travel different parts of New York City. One likes to sometimes imagine traveling in New York City is like how The Warriors had to get back home in The Warriors….lol.
Going back to this 2000 list….I was surprised how many of these movies were unknown to me…I think about 15 in the Top 100 were that way. I guess you did not have that issue. That is still surprising me a week after putting this page together. As always…thanks for the comment and the visit.
I worked 35 years in Manhattan and most of the cinemas I went there are now gone. 1987 was a bad year as they literally closed such big ones in the city as the Rivoli, Rko Warner, Loews Stare, Movieland etc. All torn down for skyscrapers. The Warner became a Marroit Marquis hotel. Loew’s Astor Plaza became MTV studios but not anymore. There was also the Criterion and the Embassy’s (2 of them) and all those 42nd street dives, all gone. I grew up in the Bronx which has I think 1.4 million people and now has just 2 theaters. There were 3 in my neighborhood where I grew up and they’re all gone. Every other Bronx theater I saw a film in except the Bay Plaza, gone too.
Hey Dan. Thanks for sharing the memory of all these long lost movie theaters. The Bronx only has two theaters now?….that sounds so depressing. Do people in the Bronx not like movies? Goodness…there are more people living in the Bronx that the combined population of the 7 cities in my neck of the woods. I think Va. Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Newport News, Hampton and Suffolk have about 1.3 million people…..and we have about 50 theaters for those 7 cities. Good information….even though it is somewhat bittersweet.

I find these annual reviews most useful for not just giving us a comprehensive run-down of the movies marketplace in the year concerned but also for at times listing films that remind me of significant periods of my own life.
For example 2000 was the last full year, and final Christmas, of my father’s life, as he died about 2 weeks before Christmas Day 2001. [After that there were no more heated arguments in the family about Brando and The Duke!]. The Grinch was released over here on 1 Dec 2000 and my father was beside himself in shaking his head and regularly laughing at the very notion that a film should be named after-and that there should actually be in it a character like – The Grinch! So this 2000 annual review is very definitely “Voted Up!” Once again Work Horse much appreciated.
Hey Bob….thanks for the tally count and the comment on our latest yearly review. I have seen all of your favorite 11 movies. I am right there with you on American Psycho (though I admit the ending still confuses me), Men of Honor (the subject of that movie lived near me at one point in time), Unbreakable (one could argue Bruce’s last great movie) and Gladiator (though Kingdom of Heaven is the Ridley Scott movie from that time frame that I re-watch more).

I will be sharing my Top 10 2000 when I get home for a pit stop sometime tomorrow night…WoC and I will be traveling about 5,000 miles in 10 days…it is fun….but tiring. I had to write 9 new UMR movie pages before leaving….now that was a challenge. Good stuff.
A decent year for movies, but not a single great movie in my mind. Gladiator is good entertainment but not great. Castaway has a horrible ending. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is overrated. My personal favorite would be Shadow of a Vampire.
Hey Taylor. Good comment on 2000 and the movies from that year. I agree with you that there is not a single great movie on this table. Lots of movies that are very very entertaining…..but as much as a like Gladiator, Space Cowboys and Time Crime (an awesome time travel movie from Spain…I think)…I do not think any are “all-time classic movies”. Hey Taylor…I realized I mentioned Time Crimes in my comment….that movie is not in this yea…..there is a Timecode movie…and it is horrible. I am at a hotel and it will not allow me to fix errors on comments. Time Crimes is an excellent time travel movie….and I highly recommend…but it was not made in 2000….sorry for the confusion.

Tally count. Shockingly my tally feel under 100 on this one….as my current tally is 96. So your 11 is not too bad. Even more shocking is that many of these movies are unknown to me. I would have thought movies made in 2000 would all be known to me…I guess I was still working 90 hours a week back in 2000.
