Top 100 Movie Stars

This page of Top 100 Movie Stars comes from two lists.  The first list is the American Film Institute’s Top 50 Classic Stars.  The second list is our list of the Top 50 Current Stars.  Current at least compared to the AFI list.  There are 50 Actors and 50 Actresses Listed Here.  Yes some great performers were left off…but overall we feel this is an outstanding Top 100.

  1.  AFI’s Top 50 Stars – stars before 1950
  2. UMR’s Top 25 Actors – actors who became stars after 1950
  3. UMR’s Top 25 Actresses – actresses who became stars after 1950

  1. Having grown up thru the majority of these stars’ peak years, if not fading years, I personally recall who the movie magazines dubbed king of the movies during his film career, year after year. So I am more than a little surprised that John Wayne was given such a low position of 15th place. I firmly believe he deserved to be in at least the top 5. I mean seriously, the man was the epitome of a whole film genre! No one else on this list can make that claim (except maybe Bogart) Shame on these makers of lists who undervalue the greatness and star power of John Wayne.

    1. Hey Sylvia….thanks for checking out our Top 100 Movie Star page. The ranking page is the best combination of career box office, average reviews from critics and audiences and awards. You can actually sort the information. If you sort by box office, John Wayne comes in 1st. If you sort by review % he falls all the way to 65th place. If you sort by awards, John Wayne is in 22nd place. I actually wrote a book called Top 50 Stars of All-Time…Statistically Speaking and Wayne got a place in the Top 10. That book added in some more variables which helped his ranking. One of the things that hurts his review % is the amount of movies he made….I love John Wayne….but some of his 1930s B movies really hurt his percentage on this table. Thanks for sharing some of your movie memories…I really enjoying reading comments like that. Good stuff. Thanks for finding our little website.

    1. Hey cmon. I really like Johnny Depp as well. He is an all-time great….but when stacking up against everybody….he does not make this Top 100….which has some limits. Limit 1 – 50 of the stars are from the AFI list for stars before 1950…so Depp had no chance to make that list. Limit 2 – 50 of the stars came from our research of modern stars…which we broke into 25 actors and 25 actresses. So 75 spots were not available for Depp. He just missed a spot in the last 25 …when looking at modern actors. Now….in our 2nd book….we only ranked actors that have made movies in the 8 years….and of 381 stars….Depp finished 8th in that book. Thanks for checking out our Top 100 Movie Star list.

  2. What is this list of movies stars
Where is the rock , jhony Depp , Jackie Chan , santham jhonathan , Sylvester Stallone , Arnold swegneggar ,
Chris Hemsworth , Robert dwan jnr ,

    1. Hey Kalmesh….our Top 100 list is 50 from AFI Legends list, and 50 from our UMR database…which ranks movies by stats only…as good as Depp, Chan, Statham, Stallone, Arnold, all the Chrises and Downey are….they do not have enough of a career to knock out some of the legends in our list….in time they might get there….with Downey, Jr. have the best chance. I am currently putting together information for a second book that would rank just the modern day stars like the ones you have mentioned. Good feedback….thanks for stopping by.

      1. Cogerson, wow best news i’ve had in 4 months . will your second book be ready for me to give as Christmas gifts?
Kalmesh, great observation. i love your passion. on a strictly mathematical basis (based on UMR rankings) i have many of my favorite actors not qualify for the top 200. including mel gibson and kevin costner, just not enough oscar love.

        1. Hey bob cox…I am hoping to be done by the start of school….as I suspect it is going to be pretty crazy when September rolls around. I have the format I want to use….just need to get it on paper. Thanks for the encouraging words. Stay safe and healthy.

      1. Tom Cruise has proven his star power over decades (more than 30 years) of top grossing films. He remains at the top of his craft. (Even if you personally don’t like him.)

        1. Hey Sylvia….though he is not a huge favorite of mine….you have to give the man credit…he has been a box office draw for almost 40 years….not many people can make that claim. Seems like many claim they do not like him…yet almost every single one of his movies is an event…..and he has three big ones coming…..Top Gun 2, MI 7 and 8. Good feedback. I hope you will re-visit us.

  3. “Hey Bob…every day I think…I will get more done on the book.” – Cogerson earlier.

    HI WH
    I like your priorities nonetheless.

To partially Paraphrse Greenstreet in Maltese Falcon “You can always write another book but you can’t get a family that will replace the one that you have” – and THESE times will be over soon enough as your current young descendents move out into the world. I look back fondly now when my own children were growing up and already I miss the times I spend with my grandchildren as toddlers.
