  1. I saw 55 including 21 of top 24. 10s and favorites:LOTR: the fellowship of the ring, a beautiful mind, . no 10s not favorite. 9s and favorites monsters inc(anime, gasp, best ever), lara croft tomb raider. 9s not favorites: k-pax, shrek(anime gasp), I am sam , swordfish, knights tale, spy game, Americas sweethearts. a disappointing year for me in movies, so many misses. hidden gems:, bridget jones, ali, , serendipity , kate and leopold, the shipping news, hearts in atlantis, life as a house( 8s), the man who wasn’t there, bandits, the last castle(7s)

    1. Hey bob cox….I appreciate all the comments on all of these yearly reviews….in hindsight…I wish I would have released them one at a time….but the feeling of getting it done took over. 55 is about average compared to your other tally counts of this decade. I would agree…that overall this was a weak year for movies. A Beautiful Mind is well done….yet I have never re-visited that movie. I was glad when Ron Howard got his Oscar….but his winning seemed to slow down his career. Before the win…almost every single one of his movies was amazing. After the win…the became somewhat average. I have somehow managed to miss The Shipping News…but one day I will check that one out. Good stuff as always.

      1. Hey Dan….awesome lists as always. So Tortilla Soup is your favorite…I will have to check that movie out. You and the 95….what a happy consequence that is. I see you have Who Is Cletis Tout? on your list….what did you think about that one? Not many people have seen that one. Amazing lists as always!

  3. One of my top favorite films of the past 20 years was released in 2001 – The Fellowship of the Ring. I saw it three times at the cinema, which is rare for me. Usually once is enough for cinema viewing. Back in the 70s though I would happily watch the same films over and over at the cinema e.g. Jaws, Star Wars, The Omega Man, Enter the Dragon, Blazing Saddles and Naked Emmanuelle Rides Again.

There are 72 films on the chart I know I’ve seen, and 227 I haven’t seen! Looking at my files I have 81 films from 2001 in my movie collection.

    Favorites include –

    Atlantis The Lost Empire
    Behind Enemy Lines
    Black Hawk Down
    Bridget Jones’s Diary
    Enemy at the Gates
    Fast and the Furious ,The
Final Fantasy – The Spirits Within
    Hannibal
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back
    Jurassic Park III
    Kiss of the Dragon
    Knight’s Tale ,A
Lord of the Rings I -Fellowship of the Ring
    Monsters inc
    Mummy Returns ,The
    Ocean’s Eleven
    One ,The
    Pearl Harbor
    Planet of the Apes (2001)
    Rush Hour 2
    Shrek
    Swordfish
    13 Ghosts
    Tomb Raider
    Training Day
    zz-China – Shaolin Soccer
zz-Japan Anime – Cowboy Bebop The Movie
    zz-Japan Anime – Metropolis
    zz-Japan Anime – Spirited Away

Bridget Jones’s Diary was my exes favorite, watched it a lot back then. (Notting Hill too)

Top rated films I haven’t seen include – Gosford Park, In the Bedroom and Ghost World.

My most watched films of 2001 since then are probably – Lord of the Rings, Final Fantasy, Fast and the Furious and Shrek.

Good to see one of the best manga anime movies at the top of the critics chart for once, but I would have preferred Lord of the Rings at the top.

Great work as always Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve. Thanks for checkng out one of our last yearly reviews. Not in triple digits for this year….very surprising….but with some work you can get there pretty quickly….lol. Looking at your favorites list. I am right there with you on Black Hawk Down, L.O.R., Swordfish, Final Fantasy (still looks amazing almost 20 years later) and Monsters Inc. (WoC’s influence).

Interesting that your ex liked Bridget Jones and Notting Hill…..been thinking it was about time to give the current “king of mush”…Mr. Richard Curtis his own page. He actually has not directed many movies….but has written some of the great mush movies of the last 25 years…Notting Hill, Bridget Jones Trilogy, Yesterday, About Time, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Love Actually. Good stuff as always.

  4. I have seen 11 of the top 30 domestic grossers in the above charts. Here though are the 20 films that I most enjoyed.

    Lord of the Rings
    Jurassic Park 3
    Beautiful Mind
    Hannibal
    The Others
    Along Came a Spider**
    Spy Game
    The Pledge
The Score- exit screen Giant spellbinding us as usual
    Don’t Say a Word
    Serendipity***
    Domestic Disturbance
    Gosford Park
    Jeepers Creepers
    In the Bedroom
    Amelie
    From Hell
    The Majestic
    15 Minutes
    Angel Eyes

Those 20 films meet with a mixed reception from Bruce’s rating sources but their average Cogerson rating is a comfortable better-than-good 65.35%. Anyway this is another very informative and worthwhile document.

**Oh Work Horse how could you give a lowly 47% rating to a film to which I was taken to celebrate my birthday – and especially one starring my Morg?

***Steve has already savaged me for liking “mush” like this!

    1. Hey Bob….thanks for checking out my 2001 page. Well…..I enjoyed Serendipity as well….WoC and I re-watched that one pretty recently. Sometimes “mush” is needed. We tried to watch The Professor and the Madman last night…WoC gave up at the 75% mark….as at times….this movie about the first English dictionary got very gruesome….legs cut off, brutal medical procedures but the final straw for her was a scene involving castration. My point….is “mush” would have been much better last night.

I have seen all 20 that you singled out. Amelie is a fun movie. I just re-watched The Pledge yesterday…Jack’s is outstanding….though the ending is a downer. The Majestic was Jim Carrey’s first misfire after becoming a star….but I like it too. Sorry Along Came A Spider got rated so low…..hopefully your birthday party was fun….lol. Good stuff as always.

      1. HI BRUCE

Thanks for you feedback to my comments about this page and to my posts in response to your 2002 and Glenda Jackson new pages. I’m naturally pleased that at last I have got some support for my liking of “mush” like Serendipity [is Steve aware that I no longer stand completely alone over mush?]

Indeed I have also received encouragement from another quarter with connections to this site – JK Simmons whom you recently profiled. I have just finished watching him in Hugh Grant’s 2014 The Rewrite and in it JK plays a renowned family man, but towards the end of the film he tells Hugh Grant about some of the he downsides of family life by saying something like “I have to watch a movie every night- all chick flicks!” It’s just a pity though that having made guys like me more fully aware of JK, you cease to respect him by excluding him from your overall site index!

By the way [Dan-like linking up the movie Grants] I just found out today that Archibald Alexander Leach was first in line for the lead in It’s a Wonderful Life but Frank Capra who had bought the rights of the movie from RKO vetoed Archie and chose my Jimmy instead. I can’t remember you telling us about that? Also Ginger Rogers apparently turned down the ultimate Donna Reed part.

        1. Hey Bob….good trivia on Cary Grant and It’s A Wonderful Life…I had not heard that before. I remember that scene with J.K. and Hugh Grant in Rewrite….good scene and a good movie…too bad nobody saw that one. Good feedback as always.

  5. I see by your daily post that you have completed the Yearly Reviews. Congratulations!

There are four reasons why I stopped watching current movies at the cinema/renting movies. For one thing, it is very expensive to go to the cinema. For another, most types of films made until the Oscar race is on don’t interest me anymore. Third, companies like Blockbuster went out of business. But the fourth and most significant is that TCM became available to Canada in the early 2000s and I discovered that I could watch all the movies I wanted on that channel.

    I have seen 16 movies from 2001.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is A Beautiful Mind.

The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is Lord of the Rings.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is I Am Sam.

    Favourite 2001 Movies:

    A Beautiful Mind
    Gosford Park
    Moulin Rouge!
    Shrek
    The Others
    Bridget Jones’s Diary
    Mulholland Drive
    The Man Who Wasn’t There
    Bandits

Other 2001 Movies I Have Seen:

    Legally Blonde
    Amelie
    Monster’s Ball
    Ghost World
    Iris
    K-Pax
    I Am Sam

    1. Hey Flora….it took almost a full day…..but decided to knock out the final years all on the same day…..many years ago…after I had done a 1946 and 1939 yearly review…you suggested a 1976 page…and then it became a “mission” to complete this bridge of classic years to current years….so thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks for sharing your 4 reasons for not watching as many current movies. Those decisions have made you an expert on classic movies. You sharing your knowledge has been greatly appreciated over the years.

As for 2001…16 seen is pretty good….especially due to your rules. I have seen….counting….I have seen 46 of the Top 50, 73 of the Top 100…..and a total of 114. I have seen all of your 16…..with Amelie and A Beautiful Mind being among my favorites. Last Orders with Michael Caine and Helen Mirren was pretty good….granted I am biased for sure. Great feedback as always.
